Conversations with Angie Hewett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Hewett.

Hi Angie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From an early childhood age I had always known that I always wanted to help people and make them feel better. When I was a little girl around age 10, my Uncle Charlie would always ask me to sit on his back and work on his neck and shoulders with my elbows or fist, or whatever I could do to work deeply into his muscles as he was a college football player and had quite a bit of muscle pain from all of his injuries. He would always comment afterwards how much better I made him feel and I believe that sparked an interest for my career now that I’ve had since 1989…..

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think probably the hardest thing was getting started when I opened my private practice in 1990 was the fact that I had five young children,. I unfortunately did not have the support from my husband as he had become addicted to drugs, which resulted him going into numerous visits to long-term drug rehabs and also including jail time, so for me, that was the most difficult and stressful thing dealing with that at the same time trying to open a private practice. Despite those hurdles that i had to go through on a daily basis with him that ultimately led to a lengthy and very expensive divorce, I knew deep down that God had me on the right path and through my trust and faith in him combined with very strong family support i opened my practice in a great medical location, however, at the time no one was doing “Medical Massage“ in the whole County. So being the first, I believed that was a challenge as well as Massage Therapy in general had come such a long way for being respected and taken serious and completely out of the “red light district”. From the start, I always specialized in medical massage and sports injury treatment so it definitely separated me from the rest.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So for the first 14 or so years of my private practice, I was mainly concentrating on doing medical massage and sports injury treatments. I primarily was known for that in the community amongst other medical professionals. And then, approximately 22 years ago, I became “the patient“ from a head on collision that herniated my back and neck and subsequently had three failed spinal surgeries. I was desperate to find a permanent solution without another surgery. And that’s when I came across an article on the DRX9000 . Once I had read up on all the spinal problems that it could treat for a permanent solution and with it being non-invasive and non-surgical I was very interested. I did the treatment and it gave me 100% of my life back from those debilitating injuries that my Neurosurgeon’s could never fix, I feel because I had personal experience with what many of my patients went through and the fact that I could actually find a solution to fix myself, it intrigued me to become certified as a Spinal Decompression therapist and so for the last 22 years I have strictly been performing the spinal decompression on my patients that have cervical and lumbar diagnosis that include bulging disc, herniated disc, stenosis, degenerative disc disease. We have three divisions of our CLINIC. “Medical Massage” , “spa services” and “Spinal Decompression on the DRX9000 machines”
We currently employ 20 people and one of the biggest blessings is that my second oldest Daughter Crystal has been with our practice for over 25 years … We are coming up close to 40 years now in practice and our community has blessed us with tremendous growth over the years with winning numerous 1st place awards for being “The Best” in Central Florida.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
All of my childhood favorite memories have always included my two brothers and two sisters, coming from a large family. We always were active and getting into everything. Totally driving our parents crazy. Living on a lake and always water skiing whenever we wanted and having horses made my childhood absolutely amazing. Literally having the best parents you could ever ask for.
