Today we’d like to introduce you to Annah Marcelle, an up-and-coming pop artist who’s been catching the attention of music executives and producers in the Nashville area. At just 18 years of age, she’s already released nine original songs, including fan-favorites “Monster in My Mind”, “Street of Lies”, and “Lookalike”.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I always loved singing and playing piano, but I didn’t start writing my own music until I was 13. I had a friend in middle school who I met in chorus class who wrote her own music. The admiration that she got from our teachers and classmates was the main reason that I thought to myself, “Hey… why don’t I try this?” In February 2018, I wrote my very first song, “Ashamed.” Over the next couple of years, I continued to write music, but it wasn’t until Covid hit in the Spring of 2020 that I really started to focus on my music.
In August 2020, I released a bedroom-pop album called “Start Again.” Since then, I started working with different producers and focusing on perfecting my songwriting. I released four songs in 2021, and five songs in 2022. I am currently working on a personal favorite of mine, “Ruins,” which will hopefully be out in the next couple of months!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like any songwriter, there are periods of time that I go through where I can’t write. It’s like I have no inspiration, and if I did, I wouldn’t have any motivation to actually write a song. When this happens, I get very frustrated and can be really hard on myself.
I’ve learned to convince myself that I will write again, and this is just a momentary issue. I never played sports, so music was always my passion now and when I was little. Songwriting is one of the biggest things I am known for as a person, so when I am going through periods of writer’s block, it has the tendency to make me feel like I’m not good enough.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love to write songs about everyday life experiences…things that people can relate to. Out of every task that is done to make a song, my favorite part of the process is writing the lyrics! Just writing lyrics is what I started out doing, so I think that’s why I love it so much. For every one of my songs that has been released, I am the sole lyricist. I like that I can say I write all of the lyrics by myself. I write a lot of the instrumentation in my songs, but I do have help from producers and professionals that are trained to know how to make a song come alive. Lyricism has been something over the years that has helped me deal with my feelings.
It’s nice because I can share my emotions with people, but the fact that it is in song form makes it not as personal. I’m proud of myself that I’ve been able to juggle school and life, while still finding time for music. Part of the reason why I have to find time for it is that it can turn something bad in my life into something beautiful. A lot of my songs wouldn’t exist if certain bad occurrences hadn’t happened to me.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My two biggest mentors and teammates have been my dad, Steve, and my producer, Kara Greskovic (who happens to be based in Nashville). My dad has been helping me every step of the way, and he is always pushing me to my highest potential. Without him, I would not be where I am today musically, and I can guarantee that the only person that would be hearing my songs is me.
Kara has produced my last two songs, “Love a Liar” and “Lookalike,” and is also producing my next song, “Ruins.”
She is so talented and is able to take my songs to the next level. If I told my 13-year-old self that I had a producer working with me on my songs (especially as cool as Kara), she would call me crazy! I’m so thankful for both of them, and I 1000% could not do this without them by my side!
