Today we’d like to introduce you to April Hamilton.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my real estate career 7 years ago, after working for over 10 years in various customer service positions and then moving to Human Resources roles. I was prompted to begin my entrepreneurial journey at that time due to being a working mother, and finding out that school schedules and work schedules were very conflicting. My son entered Pre-K and I was working full time, I was so excited for him to be going to school until I found out they dismiss at 2 pm daily, and at the Pre-K grade level there was no option of aftercare, so I’d have to pick him up daily.
I had made arrangements for a sitter to pick him up but after a while, she was no longer able to do so and I was left to decide between taking him out of school or leaving my job, so I could handle my parental responsibility. I came to Nashville from Chicago in 2003 to attend Tennessee State University, so I have no family here to help out. I chose my son and knew I would have to do something different because school wasn’t going anywhere and I know a traditional work schedule world likely always be a conflict. I took the steps to get licensed as a real estate agent because I knew the industry was solid and could provide the flexibility I needed. I wanted to also use my professional skills in customer service to benefit people in a substantial way. Real estate was the best choice for me because as the name implies it’s REAL, I can help people REALLY change their lives through my business, and it’s something that will never go away!
Starting out as a Realtor, I was totally naive to everything that comes with being an entrepreneur and had to learn how to build my business. My first brokerage had amazing training and I was able to learn a lot from several mentors there but still in my first year I made not one sale! I ended up going back into HR jobs over the next couple of years while pursuing real estate part-time. Most people would quit if they don’t make money right away but I knew with perseverance I could have a great business. My desire to help people in my community also never diminished due to lack of income.
Needless to say by my fourth year I’d started having progress and getting more exposure. I moved to EXP Realty In 2019 and couldn’t be happier with the decision to become an agency owner. Last year I had my best business year and I’m on pace to beat that record this year! I’m now a Certified Mentor with EXP which is very rewarding because I help new agents to avoid some of the trials, tribulations, and mistakes I made when I first started!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to building a successful and profitable business was not easy or smooth. Many don’t realize that to be in the real estate industry you actually have lots of expenses and you have to build your business from the ground up, get your name out there and most importantly show people your success through your clients’ success.
I’ve also had 3 more kids since I first started my business so juggling a business and family was challenging at first but I never let it stop me! I would take my kids to show houses with me or whatever it took to make sure I could show up for my clients!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Residential sales, helping both Buyers and Sellers. I love being able to help first-time homebuyers achieve that major goal and seeing their excitement! I also love helping second-time buyers who are moving up, I specialize in assisting with selling and purchasing simultaneously. Always going what’s best for my client, I work hard to help sellers get the most profit out of selling and help my buyers get the best deal while purchasing.
I’m most proud of my growth overall as a Realtor, I wasn’t an overnight success but proud to know that now if someone contacts me needing assistance I always get them the results they want or better! What also sets me apart from other Realtors is that I aim to provide services beyond closing the real estate deal. I’m also a licensed financial service professional so I can really help clients to understand how to secure their wealth and assets long term.
If I sell you a home worth $350k I’ll also show you how to protect your home with proper life insurance to ensure if you pass away your family can keep the home, and I can help set up an investment plan to pay the home off sooner than the term of your mortgage! I can be the one-stop-shop for my clients for anything financially related.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are of times spent with my great grandmother, she called me her “right hand” and “sidekick” we would watch Wheel of Fortune, Julia Childs cooking, and read the Bible together. She surely spoiled me and I could ask for anything she would always provide it.
