Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Calhoun.
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Makeup has honestly been part of my life for a long time. Before I ever thought about making money from it, I was the girl getting up and doing a full face before school just because I loved it. Was I good? Absolutely not at first lol. I went through the bad brow era, bought products I had no idea how to use, and basically got my first education from YouTube University.
I started doing makeup professionally in college, and there really wasn’t some elaborate plan behind it. I just decided to try. I still remember having my first paying client and being so grateful that someone trusted me, while simultaneously overthinking every single thing I was doing because I wanted it to be perfect. She loved her makeup, thankfully, and I kept going.
The journey since then hasn’t been perfectly linear. Consistency has probably been one of my biggest lessons. But somewhere along the way, I stopped feeling like someone who was trying to be a makeup artist and started becoming confident in the artist that I actually am. I’m learning what my style is, what I do well, and that I don’t have to create exactly like everybody else.
What I’m most grateful for, though, are the women. Makeup has introduced me to so many different people and allowed me to be part of birthdays, weddings, photoshoots and moments that are genuinely important to them. I want anyone who sits in my chair to feel cared for, special and beautiful. Not just because of the makeup, but because of their experience.
And I feel like I’m at an interesting point now because I’m proud of what I’ve built, but I don’t feel like I’ve “arrived.” I actually feel like I’m entering a much bigger chapter.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. As I mentioned previously, one of my biggest challenges has been consistency. There have been times where I was really motivated and showing up for the business, and other times where I would get overwhelmed, second-guess myself, or fall out of rhythm.
I’ve also had to work through comparison. In the beauty industry, it’s very easy to look at other artists and feel like you should be doing what they’re doing, creating the way they create, or growing at the same pace. A big part of my journey has been learning to trust my own artistry and accept that I don’t have to look like everyone else to be successful.
Balancing a full-time job while building a business has also been a challenge. There are only so many hours in a day, so I’ve had to learn how to manage my time, stay organized, and keep showing up even when I’m tired.
I think most of the obstacles have taught me that building something takes patience. I’m still learning, but I’ve become much better at giving myself room to grow without letting every setback make me question the entire journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional makeup artist specializing in bridal, special event, and soft glam makeup. I work with women who have important moments on their calendar, and my job is to make make one part of that day feel easy. Us women already have enough to think about. I want getting ready to feel smooth, relaxed, and taken care of.
Of course, I love beauty. I love makeup, I love beautiful skin. My goal is always to create a polished look without completely changing the woman sitting in my chair. But the actual experience matters just as much to me. I want my clients to be able to sit down, exhale, and know, “Okay, I feel safe and taken care of.”
I think that’s a big part of what sets me apart. I’m not just showing up to my clients to apply makeup and leave. I pay attention to the details, the timeline, the environment, and the person in front of me. Whether she’s getting married, going to a major event, celebrating a birthday, or having photos taken, I understand that the makeup is attached to a moment she’ll probably remember for a long time.
I’m most proud of the women I’ve met through this business and the trust they’ve placed in me. I’ve gotten to be part of some really beautiful milestones, and that never feels small to me.
At the end of the day, I want my clients to look beautiful, feel like themselves, and enjoy getting ready. Life can already be chaotic enough. Your makeup appointment should not be.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I remember being creative and ambitious, but very much on my own terms. If I loved something, I was all in. I could spend hours learning about it, practicing it, figuring it out. If I didn’t care about it? Whew. I got bored easily with things that didn’t excite me, which honestly makes a lot of sense now.
I also loved animals growing up and still do. For a long time, I was convinced I was going to be a veterinarian. I’ve always had that nurturing side to me, so at the time it felt like the perfect fit. I had no idea how much school that would take and I gave up on the dream.
Then beauty became another one of those things I genuinely loved. I could sit and watch makeup videos forever, practice different looks, and teach myself just because I wanted to get better. There was no forcing it. I was naturally curious about it.
I think that’s a big reason entrepreneurship fits me so well now. I really appreciate being able to build a life around what I’m actually passionate about. I like having room to create, grow, change my mind, try something new, and make something my own. I’ve learned that when I care about something, I can be extremely focused and driven. I just need to actually care about it first. Lol.
