Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayanna Jahneé.
Hi Ayanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in the church. Watching my mother sing in the choir inspired me to join and my mother’s best friend who I affectionately call Aunt Connie gave me my first solo. From there I started to audition and perform in local theatre productions along side my mother to simply spend more time with her since she would be the seamstress sewing all the costumes, as well as sing and act in the productions. But by doing that I soon found out I was just as multifaceted as she was. After loosing her to cancer when I was 14 I continued to keep her close by staying in theatre and singing throughout my high school years. I then went to Columbia College Chicago for two years and just as I was headed into my Junior year of college I got my first big break on NBCs The Voice season 10 where I was the final contestant selected for the season with Christina Aguilera as my coach and Patti LaBelle as my mentor . Once my time on The Voice came to an end I went home to Nashville and started a band and between 2018-2022 I’ve released EPs and singles my first EP untitled “Unfinished Business” being recorded in the the world-renowned Black Bird Stuidos in Nashville with the help of my good friend Gerry Valenti. During that time span I also had the opportunity to have my own residency singing in Downtown Nashville on Broadway for two years. I am currently contracted on Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the seas as a featured singer. This experience has giving me a full circle moment as I am doing a combination of theatre productions as well as Jazz and contemporary duo sets.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s a saying nothing worth having comes easy. The road to being a performing artist has been nothing shy of challenging. From balancing adult life having to work unfulfilling jobs to pay the bills but still actively trying to pursue a career as an artist. It has truly been a journey from challenging myself on things I say “I can’t do” verses what I actually can physically do. Getting vocal nodules and feeling like my gift was being taken from me but really it was just God giving me the opportunity to learn how to take care of myself for the bigger picture learning the balance of being patient but proactive so many ups and downs on the road to greatness but I can confidently say I’m ready for whatever comes next.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multifaceted performing artist. Most known for my ability to perform live and captivate an audience. I am now a Featured Singer on Royal Caribbean. Something in truth I never saw myself doing but I am most proud of how far I’ve come. I can look back on my life and say every small step I took towards my dreams has now amounted to me being able to currently travel the world and perform in front of people from all walks of life. This achievement makes my heart smile and looking forward to my next adventure.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people who know me and my brand might not know about me is that I don’t actually write the type of music I enjoy listening to on a regular basis. So ultimately I think they’d be shocked at my the artist and genres I listen to in my playlist.
