Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Fox.
Hi Becca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While I’ve always baked (since my mom let me as a young child!), I never seriously considered opening my own sweets business. It was a hobby and that was all! My background is in retail; I was in the merchandising/buying division at Walmart for a decade. My corporate career was my priority and I would bake when I had time.
Fast forward to having my first child, I took a 1-year leave of absence and in that time, we relocated to Brentwood (I grew up here, yes, one of the rare unicorns!). I started doing contact consulting and had clients for about 6 years and just baked for fun. However, as I started to share photos and videos on social media, I continued to receive more and more requests to make birthday cakes for friends and family…I would think about starting a business and then just push the thought away!
In 2021, the perfect collaboration opportunity presented itself as I partnered with a local friend to create an epic Valentine’s Box and I made 3 different cakes. Boy was I overwhelmed but totally energized by my new venture – I sold over 60 mini cakes that first holiday! I decided to just take it week by week and month by month. Here we are, 5 years later and it’s been such a fun ride!
Working part-time has also allowed me to discover that I love volunteering and investing in our community: we foster dogs with Critter Cavalry Rescue, I help lead a Wednesday Night 3rd grade girls Bible Study at our wonderful church Brentwood Baptist, get to serve on the PTO Board at Crockett Elementary School and most recently learned more about local politics by being on the re-election committee supporting Rhea Little for Brentwood Commissioner!
Now, about the name of our business: having such a fun last name, as Fox, I knew I wanted to incorporate that into my business name…bless my sister for coming up with the name!
At Frosted Fox Sweets, our priority is to bake from-scratch homemade desserts that are the best treats you’ve tasted, they just, happen to look pretty too.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My background in the retail industry helped tremendously as I started and as I have continued to grow – I’ve always had a profitable business. I make sure to do a “self-check” to make sure I’m enjoying what I’m doing – finding joy in your work is so important, even if it is a hard job! Being a baker is actually a very physically demanding job in the way that you’re always on your feet & you have to physically create the products to sell but I have found it a nice diversion to what I used to do (mostly on my computer and phone running meetings, creating presentations and running sales numbers). “Manual” labor jobs really can be satisfying!
I’ve always struggled with being content in my career and the Lord has taught me patience and how to be content, in abundance and I am so thankful! It is tempting to want to scale up and open a retail space or take on commercial distribution, however, our family comes first and having the discernment on what to move forward with and not to, has been a blessing.
I need to keep my business fresh and new, so I am constantly working on new products and ideas to keep things fun!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known for from-scratch homemade desserts. I specialize in custom cakes and variety treat boxes and dessert boards. I love small bites of deliciousness & that is what my dessert boards & my new dessert table / bars (think charcturie table but with homemade desserts) provide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
My faith has played a huge role in bringing me to where I am today. It was a big leap of faith to leave my corporate career to stay home with my children but I knew God would provide for me in that new adventure and he did big time! After taking a full year off from working, he brought clients to me that I could consult with part time. I did contractor consulting for about 6 years and then once that was winding down, this bakery opportunity fell into my lap. I have had the most wonderful support from the best customers, I truly am so thankful for my business and how I can manage it around our family.
The scripture I have hanging up in my baking studio is I Peter 4:10 “each of you, should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in it’s various forms.” I am so thankful to share my talents with our community.
I don’t believe in luck 😉
