Today we’d like to introduce you to Bert Wynder.
Hi Bert, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born in North Philly and grew up in the hood (ghetto) of Bridgeton, NJ. My family didn’t have much. When I was little, my mom and my grandma would work two jobs just to make ends meet for 6 kids.
Around this time hip-hop was just coming on the scene and I was blessed to see it at a young age. I remember my brothers and sisters would play the hottest mixtapes on our boombox.
Songs from legendary rappers like The Bestie Boys, Rakim, Slick Rick, and Dougie Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Roxxane Shante, Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, and many more.
Besides the music, I was blown away because my older brother was wearing the latest fashion/jewelry that these artists were wearing. Most of the designs were created by the legendary designer Dapper Dan from Harlem. Dapper Dan’s designs are what inspired me.
I figured I could bring these designs I had in my head to life to not only show others from my area that it could be done but also show the world that in our small area there is a lot of talent and potential. To this day, that’s what I’ve been trying to do!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a struggle getting off the ground mainly because when you’re tryna stand out and do something diff not many can relate to ya vision.
From getting pre-orders to showing people why my designs are worth the money and inspiration what I’ve learned in your heart has to really be in it and you have to love what you do.
For me, just being able to design and create the things the way I do is satisfaction in itself because I feel like I’m inspiring others to go independent and break new grounds as well.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m not only an artist in music, I also design and sell merch from clothing to jackets to throw pillows to bomber jackets to sneakers… I’m more of an entrepreneur than anything.
My specialty is being able to not only make great business ventures but also help others connect to people they may want to work with. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid to venture into the unknown. I can be a great team player and I’m also not afraid to stand out and be a lone wolf.
I’m most proud of the fact I didn’t give up on myself and I completed my objective of becoming a sneaker and clothing designer even when many didn’t believe it was possible.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mom Debbie Morgan and my dad Robert Wynder deserve credit because I naturally get my fashion know-how from them.
Also, my older brother, Steve Morgan because when I was younger, watching how he coordinated what he would wear showed me how to put outfits together. Ghostface from the Wu-Tang Clan as well he’s another big inspiration to my fashion sense as well as Eric B and Rakim.
Some clients who have supported me are Sugga Che from Louisville, Kentucky, Akila Love from La, California, Fiya from Philly, my boy, Zion from Accra Ghana in Africa, as well as, Nicole Verdino who’s originally from Queens, NY as well as my brother, Lester Robinson.
