Conversations with Caroline Voisine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Voisine.

Hi Caroline, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Nashville in 2016 to be a librarian and had no idea what a creative world this town had to offer. In 2017, I started a personal style blog as a fun hobby and a place where I could write about whatever was on my mind. Through that blog, I met so many other creatives in town and found myself taking photos of my friends. I took a leap of faith and invested in a camera and went from there. I found myself taking photos of everything; fashion editorials, lifestyle portraits, musicians, concerts, weddings, you name it.

In 2020, everything came to a halt and I found myself purely creating to create. My style became more defined and I leaned into this dark romantic fairytale aesthetic. I really let my inner child take to reigns and produced some of my favorite images. I’m inspired by the daydreams I had as a child that is finally coming back to me as an adult. These images inspired my writing as well. When I share them I try to include the words that I felt came along with them. My philosophy on life is to live it unapologetically – and my hope is that when anyone steps in front of my lens, they can be unabashedadly themselves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t know that any path is smooth through an entire journey. My journey with photography has had its ups and downs but I am so grateful for every experience. While quarantine and the pandemic really hit my business hard, the isolation eventually inspired what my style is now. The last 18 months have been the most challenging for me personally and there have been chasms of time where I felt no creativity whatsoever. These moments never last though, they come in waves and I feel that I have come to terms with the flow of it all. People are not meant to be in a constant state of creative production, we need rest and care and stimulation from other places.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It took a while to finally put a title to my style of photography and I call it Dark Romantic. I want my work to feel like a dream-like you have stepped into a moment in time that you were never expecting or stumbled across a scene you were never meant to see but here you are. Capturing motion is something I find myself doing again and again. When I work with models, clients, or anyone, I start by explaining that my directing style is very relaxed. I’ll give them something to do or ask them to act something out instead of asking for poses.

While they are busy acting and getting lost in their motion, I’ll start shooting through it all until I feel we have captured the story. I’ve always been a restless person and I find that reflected in my work. I am incredibly proud that my work feels so authentically me. If you were to peek into my daydreams, you would find exactly what you see in my photographs. There was a point in time when I thought I needed to have a specific style to get booked by clients, but I was never satisfied with my art. What sets me apart from other photographers in Nashville is truly my vision and storytelling. I take easy and mundane actions such as walking through a field and turn it into a dreamy fairytale.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We are in a transitional period of fine art photography becoming more and more accessible. Social Media allows people to find artists more easily and, in turn, hire them for their art specifically. It is so much more simple for a client to find an artist they truly love and see themselves reflected in the art. It also feels that video will be much accessible and I can see a lot of photographers starting to offer that as well.
