Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrissy Crater.
Hi Chrissy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As a young artist, I began working seriously with oil painting at the age of 14. I continued with that medium for another 15 years until I discovered the fiber art craft of rug tufting. I was enamored with it from the moment I saw a video of the process, and I’ve been working with rugs since early in the pandemic starting in September of 2020.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve felt very lucky to have had a somewhat smooth journey with my rug tufting business. I design from the heart and am very privileged to say that my vision connects with a lot of people who see my work online. I now work closely with a small Artisan Rug business in India to help with production so I can get my designs out to as many people as possible!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My subject matter is nostalgic, psychedelic, and cheerful. I draw a lot of inspiration from my 90s childhood, music, nature, and the female figure. I’m known for my “mushroom lades,” which are a mash-up of mushrooms with curvy female forms.
My moths have been getting a lot of attention lately too, which is so fun because I’ve been enjoying working with more complex symmetrical patterns found in nature. Being from Nashville has also inspired pieces such as my Dolly Mirror and Cowboy Boot designs!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My favorite childhood memory is discovering my love for music and drawing while dancing to “Achey Breaky Heart” in a little house on a gravel road in rural Tennessee.
