Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Lawson.
Hi Corey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in the North Alabama just 30 miles west of Rocket City in Athens, AL. I fell in love with the guitar around age 13 and began playing in bands as a teenager covering everything from rock, pop, country to heavy metal. I always had a passion for music and the arts. I now have gained over 15 years of experience on guitar and also play drums, percussion, and bass focusing primarily on country, rock, pop and blues/soul music.
I’ve performed live and as a studio musician for many bands and songwriters including Taylor Ray Holbrook, Todd O’Neill, Bobby McClendon, Zac Hacker, James Leblanc (Modern day Bonnie & Clyde), Josh Dunne (What happens in a small town), Pop/Rock band Live By Satellite, and I’m currently playing with country artist Erath Old. I also have a heart for the technical side of the industry, such as production and audio engineering, and I earned a Bachelors degree in Entertainment Media Production from the University of North Alabama in 2010. I’ve produced many artists and songwriters including Zac Hacker (Nashville Star), hit songwriters Billy Lawson, James Leblanc, Josh Dunne and many more. I have also scored many films including the award-winning documentary “I’m With Phil”. I built a studio in my Nashville home in 2019 and have been working full-time in the studio and performing live ever since. Always looking to work with new people and grow my network skills and learn new things, and gain new experiences!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely lots of ups and downs. I think anyone in the music industry will tell you it’s never really a smooth-sailing ride all the way through. You have to tough through the hard times to win the prize at the end of the day. That prize may be however you perceive it! Success is different to everyone honestly. For me, if I can make a comfortable living and provide for my family doing what I love, then that is success. It took many years of grinding, learning, getting better and networking to get where I am now, and I still am not where I want to be, but I try to get a little closer every day. Small steps make long strides over time! I definitely have setbacks every now and then and feel like I’m moving backwards, but that’s just because life happens and sometimes you have to focus on other things. Career and money is not everything. My wife and my family is important to me and I’ve learned sometimes you just have to enjoy life and trust that things will align for you. Work hard, play hard!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a music producer, musician, audio engineer and songwriter. I primarily work in the country, rock, pop and Top-40 genres. I think a unique trait in me is creating “feel-good” tracks and just good, moving music. I think having a strong background in both playing music and engineering in the studio sets me apart. I can create a pro, polished track in a day by myself if you need a quick demo of a song that is studio quality at an affordable price. And from working with so many hit songwriters over the years, I’ve learned how to craft a song and what to focus my attention on and what NOT to in the production process. So I’ve gotten very quick and building a song from the ground up. I also still believe in working with other musicians and recording music live as well! I think that’s something that’s been lost in today’s music. The live, human connection in music. I’m very proud of my ability to work fast and efficient in the studio.
How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure luck has anything to do with it, but I definitely believe in God and that he is always watching over and providing. He’s had his hand on my career since day 1 I believe. Thanks and praise! I’m very fortunate for my career even though sometimes I feel like I’m still so far from where I want to be.
