Conversations with Crystal Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Walker.

Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For nearly a decade, I taught music and art for students as young as four years old up to 18 years old. Unfortunately, in 2014, I started experiencing a variety of health issues. After five years of searching for answers from countless doctors, I was diagnosed with endometriosis. The agonizing pain and host of other issues I had been experiencing for years finally made sense and I knew that I needed a stop teaching in order to heal (teaching is NOT an easy job). In February 2020, I put in my official resignation at the school I had worked at for several years. While it was a difficult decision, I knew I wanted to pursue something at a slower pace where I could express my creative side. I had no idea that my timing was kismet: one month later, the pandemic happened and we were all on lockdown! This allowed me ample amount of time to research things such as TN Cottage Food Laws, best techniques for royal icing cookie decorating, tools I would need, and much more in order to start my own home bakery. When virtual learning finally wrapped up in May 2020, I knew I felt ready to announce my business. Butterfly Bakehouse, named after my grandmother who firmly believed she would be reincarnated as butterfly, officially began in summer of 2020.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been an incredible learning experience. While I feel comfortable expressing my artistic side due to being surrounded by artistic family members and creativity growing up, math and business acumen has never been a strong suit of mine. Fortunately, my husband has those gifts I lack and has helped me figure out the logical, mathematical aspects that this small business of mine requires.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in fulfilling very customized cookie orders. I am known for my almond vanilla sugar cookies with my lemon royal icing. I am proud of the fact that I have been able to channel my artistic abilities into the baking field. Fulfilling each client’s very specific cookie vision has really allowed me to express my creative side. The journey has been so fulfilling! In my area, I am most known for my watercolor painting on cookies. In particular, I love being able to do custom pet portraits on my royal icing cookies.

  • $3.50 per cookie (basic level designs)
  • $4.00 per cookie (more intricate designs)
  • $5.00 per cookie (custom paintings)
