Conversations with Dakota Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Davis.

Hi Dakota, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a creative spark. Early on, I was able to express myself musically on guitar. While in college, I leaned into music as a possible career, and ultimately, that lead me to Nashville.

There, I was fortunate enough to travel with my friends and had the time of my life with many bands. I also started painting and selling my art and after some time, I found my true love and inspiration in woodworking.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We are all trying to find our way, right? Life is an interesting meandering of wrong turns and dead ends. But you have to go through some difficult terrain in life to reach the waterfall. I have always felt a need to be creative and I am thankful that I finally have my own business in Timberworks Studio.

It is my waterfall. Struggles? Well, have you ever tried to start a business with your father? It’s funny, we are having to learn to communicate all over again. Not as a father and son – but as business partners. We are getting there.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Timberworks Studio produces solid timber interior beams and mantels and home accents. What we do is a lost art.

Not many people make things like this anymore. We are using time-honored skills and traditions passed down from our forefathers. It is very satisfying to take a 200-year-old cedar timber and make it into something beautiful as the focus of a customer’s home.

When you see someone’s face light up in surprise in awe about something you made by hand… there’s no better feeling. It makes you proud. But we can’t take all the credit. Mother nature did most of the work. That’s why our tagline reads: Designed by nature, made by us.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Pandemic to prosperity. When you’ve binged watched everything on Netflix you start looking around for something else to do. My family has a history of woodworking and it’s always been something I could pick up when I wanted.

So, with all the time to think and reflect on the pandemic… we were like… why don’t we do this more? The idea for Timberworks was born. We literally sold everything we could to raise money for a computer and tools. Our wives even chipped in money from this and that and before you knew it we had everything we needed to have a chance – to try to fail or succeed. Eventually, our products caught the eye of an investor, and here we are, living the American dream.

Starting a business is a lot like promoting a new band. You do a demo (your first product), you then get a paying gig (a customer), and hopefully get a record deal (a business investor).

They are very similar. So never discount anything you learn along the way. You can use all the knowledge you pick up along your journey to find your place.
