Conversations with Damian Diaz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damian Diaz.

Hi Damian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi! My name is Damian Diaz. I am a multi-instrumentalist, professional bassist, and music director. Like most, my journey to get to where I am today is one with many chapters. I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue music. I have always had a strong passion for music and always sought to pursue new opportunities in music. My passion for music led me to pursue a degree in Music Performance at Texas A&M in Kingsville. After finishing school, I went straight into ministry work at my local church while still touring on the side. I learned a great deal and quickly worked my way into leadership roles in production and music directing.

When COVID hit, it hit us hard. I quickly found myself without a job and even though it seemed like a scary time, for me it was my chance to re-evaluate what I was most passionate about and really re-evaluate my goals. This allowed me the opportunity to explore creating my own brand and all the pieces started to fall into place after that.

By combining my main love of performing as a multi-instrumentalist and my extensive knowledge of production and technology, BASSically Global was born. The opportunity to expand my education led me to the University of Texas in Arlington, where I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in Jazz Studies.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road to get to this point. The most difficult decision I have had to make by far is taking the faith step to leave my corporate job and go out on my own. It’s hard to walk away from a perfectly stable environment and leave it for an uncertain future. At the time, I didn’t know if I was going to succeed but I certainly believed that I would. This motivated me to work even harder in order to make my dream a reality. Deciding to pursue a career in the music industry, an industry that is unpredictable and unstable as it is, ended up being the best thing that I could have ever done. I quickly learned that starting a business is not an easy task, but I have been fortunate to learn so much along the way.

As a relatively new business, I have found that in the beginning, the business side does tend to take more time than working a traditional corporate job would. It’s your baby, so you want to pour as much time and energy into it as you can. One thing that has been helpful for me is being intentional with my time and creating professional boundaries. You really have to guard your time and make sure that boundaries are established early on in your business relationships. I do my best to set tangible goals and create steps to take in order to achieve those goals. If you have a clear-cut plan of what you want to achieve it’s easier to adhere to the work-life boundaries that you have in place. Balance is also crucial to maintaining a happy and healthy work-life balance.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been blessed to be able to partner with so many incredible companies and artists which have allowed me the opportunity to expand my services. I offer a comprehensive approach to all things music. I offer a vast variety of services, such as live and studio musicians, private lessons, e-courses (coming soon) as well as production and engineering services.

I would have to say I am most known for my versatility in all genres and all things music technology. I am the guy who is prepared for any scenario, whether it’s technical issues, last-minute musical changes, advice on tone, etc. My vast experience in Music Directing across multiple genres, being well-versed as a multi-instrumentalist and my unparalleled knowledge in live production has equipped me to put myself in a position to be versatile and effective as a bassist as well. I am usually the guy who has backup plans for my backup plans. I plan for all scenarios and am quick to come up with a feasible solution. My ability to remain calm under stressful situations is also something I am proud to say has taken me far.

I would say that overall, I am most proud of my ability to facilitate the music experience in some way, whether it is by playing my instrument, coordinating the overall production aspect, or music directing. I am proud to be able to create and shape a unique music experience for every project I have the privilege of being involved in. Most recently, I am proud that I had the opportunity to make my debut playing bass at the Grand Ole Opry for country music artist, Coffey Anderson. It was truly an honor and an absolute dream come true to be able to play at such a historic place.

To play even a small part in what was an amazing night is definitely a highlight of my career. One major thing that sets me apart from others is my commitment to excellence. I take the time to schedule a one-on-one consultation with each client to discuss their individual needs. Once we determine your goals we can then customize a unique plan to help you accomplish your goals.

Another thing that sets me apart is my reliability. I am the guy that you want around when there is a problem. I thrive under pressure and have the ability to maintain a level head and find a creative solution approach to problem-solving.

Any big plans?
I have big plans for 2023. I am looking forward to expanding my client base and helping other musicians and artists accomplish their music goals.

I am looking forward to all the new musicians and businesses that I will be partnering with in 2023. I also have plans on growing my team, reaching some big goals, and exploring new opportunities. My goal is to always spread positivity and awareness of music wherever I go. I can’t wait to see what we do in 2023!
