Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Denise Brannen.
Hi Dr. Denise, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story began when I was a little girl who had a lot to say but struggled to get the words out the way I wanted. People laughed at the way I spoke, and I started to believe it was safer to stay quiet. Over time, that silence followed me into different parts of my life. I became good at keeping the peace, adjusting to other people, and saying “I’m fine” even when I wasn’t.
For a long time, I thought being quiet meant I was strong. It took faith, honest reflection, and the support of people who truly listened for me to see how often I was silencing myself. I began learning that reclaiming my voice didn’t mean becoming the loudest person in the room. It meant trusting what I felt, speaking honestly, and no longer making myself smaller just to belong.
That journey became the heart of my memoir, Is There Anybody Listening? Today, I share my story through my writing, speaking, and coaching to help others reflect on their own voices and begin rebuilding self-trust. I’m still growing, but I’m no longer willing to abandon my voice to make a moment easier.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my earliest struggles was feeling like my words didn’t come out the way I intended. Being laughed at made me hesitant to speak, and that hesitation followed me into adulthood. In different spaces, including the military, church, and relationships, I often worried about being misunderstood or seen as “too much.” I learned to overthink my words, keep the peace, and say “I’m fine” when I wasn’t.
The hard part was realizing that the silence I once used to protect myself was also keeping me from being fully present in my own life. Rebuilding trust in my voice has taken time. I still have moments when I want to shrink or second-guess myself, but I’m learning to speak with honesty and clarity, even when it feels uncomfortable. That journey has not been easy, but it has helped me become more grounded in who I am.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My professional life has included both public service and creative work. Alongside my career supporting Navy programs, I’m an author, speaker, and transformational coach, and the founder of The Brannen Effect. My work centers on helping capable adults who have learned to silence, shrink, or over-edit themselves to maintain belonging reconnect with their voice and rebuild self-trust.
Writing Is There Anybody Listening? gave me a way to put language to experiences I had carried for years. That personal journey also inspired my L4 framework—Listen, Locate, Liberate, Live—which gives people a thoughtful path to notice the patterns behind their silence and make choices that feel true to who they are. I don’t believe reclaiming your voice means becoming the loudest person in the room. It means being able to tell yourself the truth and speak with clarity.
I’m most proud that I turned a deeply personal story into something that can help others feel less alone. What sets my work apart is the blend of lived experience, compassionate reflection, and practical tools. I want people to know they don’t have to become someone else to use their voice; they can make room for more of who they already are.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family has been a foundation for me, especially my parents and siblings. I have a professional mentors who encouraged me and saw my capacity, even when I was still learning to take up space. My pastors and spiritual leaders also helped me through important seasons. They offered wisdom, prayer, and safe places where I could grow into my voice.
I’m grateful to my military family and friends who have stood beside me over the years, and my publishing team. They helped me bring Is There Anybody Listening? from an idea to a finished book, pushing me when I needed it and steadying me when the process felt overwhelming. I’m also thankful to everyone who trusted me with their stories. Their courage reminded me that I wasn’t alone—and that my story might help someone else feel less alone, too.
