Conversations with Eren Brooks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eren Brooks.

Hi Eren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My name is Eren Brooks and I am currently a Senior at Fisk University. I am currently obtaining my Bachelor’s of Arts in Music degree. I have been using my vocal and artistic talent since the age of 3. I began taking dance classes featuring the genres of tap, ballet, and jazz. In addition to my dance classes, I was involved with my church choir as well as piano lessons. Once I reached middle school, I began competing in All West Junior High Choir. From this point, I realized singing was my true passion. As I entered high school, not only did I compete in All-West Senior High choir each year, but I also participated in All-State. The summer before I went into my junior year, I auditioned for Governor’s School of the Arts located on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. It was from that moment on I knew that I would further my education to make music my career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles I faced along the way made me hone and practice my craft. In sixth grade, I was kicked out of my choir class for not reaching the bar set by my then choir director. It was not until the following year that I was able to be reinstated into my position as a member of the choir. that was a humbling beginning for me. It taught me that occasionally I may hear many “nos”, but one day I will receive a “yes”. Another challenge I faced. came during my freshman year of college. The summer before I entered Fisk, I was involved in a car accident that had an effect on my vocal chords. My voice teacher instructed me to do a full year of vocal therapy. This ultimately delayed my music training. I eventually graduated from my treatment and was able to sing again. This extra time allowed me to discover my musical preference of theatre music.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, I am remodeling my social media to reflect my training with voice and theatre. As I complete my training and finish my undergraduate degree, I will also search and apply for graduate schools that focus on Musical Theatre training.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Yes, I have taken many risks and although only a few did not come into fruition for me, I still persevered and gained confidence. For example, although I did many music competitions during my junior high and high school days, I did not make the All-National Choir for the year 2017-2018. This had an effect on how I viewed myself for a while but I realized that people take risks for themselves, not for other people. This lead me to begin paying attention to small details when it came to technicalities of music. Had it not been for that audition, I would have never auditioned for the Fisk University music program.
