Conversations with Hannah George

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah George.

Hi Hannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in makeup about fourteen years ago when I was getting a college degree in theatre and working as a special effects makeup designer for a stage production. I absolutely loved the craft, the aspect of creation, and the idea of bringing art to life. After working in that field for a short while, I shifted gears and started working in the bridal and retail beauty industry when I started as a retail artist with MAC Cosmetics. Through my career with them, I built an amazing clientele and gained so much product, color theory, and application knowledge. During Covid-19, I left MAC to begin my journey as a freelance solo artist and have been blessed to be working as a bridal artist in the Johnson City and surrounding area for the last six years on my own. I’ve had the pleasure of working with hundreds of brides, prom clients, maternity shoot or family photo clients, and I have fallen in love with every aspect of the job.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working for yourself can be a bit of a struggle! There are slow seasons, moments of comparison that can steal your joy, and always lessons to learn along the way. My biggest lesson learned is how to keep a work life balance, and that sometimes it’s okay to say no. Not every client is meant for you, and that’s okay! I’ve learned collaboration over competition every time and that there’s room for everyone to succeed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do all forms of makeup, but I specialize in bridal makeup. I’m known for soft, romantic bridal looks with a skin focus. I am most proud of the diversity of my work—I’ve worked with clients of all ages, skin tones and types, and textures. What sets me apart from others is my energy on wedding days. I love to provide a calm, steady presence for my brides while also keeping the mood light. I pride myself on being able to “read the room” and pick up on mood changes so I can help the day go as smoothly as possible.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was a very dramatic, sassy child. I loved to tell jokes, be the center of attention, and dress up my mom and grandma. I loved to paint their faces and do their hair and put on pretty dresses to host “fashion shows” for my grandpa. I was always interested in makeup, movies, the theater, ballet, and art of any kind.
