Conversations with Hannah Strumner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Strumner.

Hi Hannah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started writing music when I was about five or six years old. My grandfather and uncle were both very musical, and so my grandma had a piano at her house, and I started just always playing the piano there. And my uncle was a great guitarist, and I always admired his musical ability. When I was in elementary school and I would get bullied along with some medical issues, it was a pretty lonely time for me. So I used music as a way to express how I was feeling that day. I didn’t really think of it as writing songs at the time. It was more singing to my own little tune and adding my words to it. Back in late 2019, just a few months before COVID hit, I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. Because of it being so close to COVID-19 it was a very hard time to have a new diagnosis and very scary as well. I started doing a lot of live streaming on Instagram, just for my friends. But people all over the world started joining my lives and listening to the songs that I was writing, which made me think, hey, this is something that would be incredible to do as a career rather than just a hobby. And that’s when I started just jumping in and chasing this dream.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I’ve realized that because it hasn’t been a smooth or an easy road, that I’ve been able to create songs that I never would have if it not been for going through these challenges. So I look at going through things in life as something that could be turned into good because you get some pretty good songs out of it, even though at the time it may be extremely hard to go through.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love writing music and singing. I am most proud of a song I wrote called “Old Phone Line” which was right after my Type One Diabetes diagnosis. Another one I am proud of is a song I got to record in Nashville called “Misplaced My Boyfriend,” along with an upcoming one that I’m extremely excited to release. I feel like for me, I’ve tried to write a lot of songs that people can relate to. I write music from love songs to breakup songs to just general hardships. One of my newest songs that is going to be coming out very soon is a song about going through anxiety, which is something that I have gone through throughout my life, and I feel like so many other people have as well, and it can be a very lonely feeling. So I try to write about things that are relatable and help people feel less alone.

What matters most to you?
My faith matters so much to me. I actually got really inspired in music by being in a church choir as a kid, and that also was another thing that introduced me to music but in a way of singing in front of others and hearing input from the choir teacher. I also have an amazing mom, dad, brother, and dog who mean the world to me and they are the first that I show my songs to! I love to hear what they think!
