Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Castro.
Hi Heather, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, and thanks for the opportunity to share my story with you! I’m Heather, an interior designer and single mom of half a dozen girls (5 with us and one with Jesus). We live just south of Nashville on a beautiful 3.5 acres. For years I’ve had a dream of opening a little shop to sell items for the home. That dream started in 2016 when I started my business, opened an online shop, and began participating in various Nashville markets. A few years later, I started working with clients in their homes to help them create spaces they love. And that has become my passion: helping others create beautiful rooms that they enjoy to be in and reflect who they are.
Growing a business while raising 5 girls solo has been quite challenging. Some have told me I couldn’t do it and shouldn’t even try. Others have suggested I just go work for someone, that growing a business in my season of life and circumstances would be impossible. However, as the months and years have passed, I have always felt a nudge from God to keep pressing on, that I was right where I was supposed to be. Honestly this is a little humorous to me, considering I’m not one to usually take risks and love security and predictability. Simply put, that is the very opposite of what this adventure has been. There were so many times I was ready to throw in the towel, but despite how hard it all seemed, there were always my close friends who encouraged my giftings and literally didn’t let me give up! Even though a pandemic and several hardships, this little business of mine have grown! And I’m so grateful and proud of where it is today.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve faced some very challenging circumstances over the last decade of my life, including the loss of a child, and tough divorce, to name a few. However, despite all these and their ripple effects on my life, the dream of using my gifts and talents to help others create beautiful spaces in their homes has continued to motivate me. The encouragement of my 5 girls and others in my life is a huge part of the success of my business. I’m grateful for each person in my life who has believed in me and not let me give up!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My business model is twofold. On one side, I work with clients in their homes, helping them with building, renovations, furnishing rooms, or simply refreshing a space. I always work hard to meet my clients’ styles and tastes, whether traditional, modern, midcentury, rustic or a combination of a few. I love to incorporate the old with the new. I also work with photographers and style for photoshoots.
On the other side, I specialize in curating unique home items, and sell them in a shop in downtown Franklin called City Farmhouse. Here you will find primitive, antique, and vintage items that are unique and professionally styled so you can see how they will work in your home. It is a unique and beautiful shop!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t call it luck, but rather Divine Providence. I believe God has played a huge role in guiding me along the journey of starting, continuing, and growing my business, despite the odds stacked (often very high) against me. I have always said, if my business ever grew to be a success, it would be all because of Him, the strength He gave me and the people He has placed in my life.
