Full Biography for Jennifer Parker, MEd
Jennifer Parker, MEd is a transformational public speaker, Stage IV breast cancer survivor, heart transplant recipient, and 35-year healthcare veteran whose extraordinary journey through illness, advocacy, and resilience has positioned her as one of the most compelling voices in patient empowerment and human-centered healthcare today.
Raised in Chicago, IL and moving to West Tennessee at 16 years old, Jennifer spent more than three decades serving in various positions of the clinical laboratory including Director and Laboratory Operations Manager, leading clinical teams through complex environments in the medical laboratory. She retired early to grow Southern Sparkle Florals, her boutique floral design business which she built from the ground up at age 54 into a nationally published brand featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Southern Bride -twice, and other publications.
Less than three months after retirement, Jennifer was diagnosed with chemotherapy-induced congestive heart failure, a consequence of the very medication that had saved her life from Stage IV breast cancer sixteen years earlier. What followed was over an 18-month journey of declining health, difficult decisions, provider dismissals, and fierce self-advocacy that would test everything she knew about medicine, courage, and faith. In June 2023, she was referred to the transplant team at UAB Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. She was admitted the same day and was told she may not get to go home until she received a new heart. On July 13, 2023, twenty-nine days after being hospitalized, Jennifer received that gift.
Her recovery was nothing short of remarkable. Four months after surgery she ran her first 5K. Eight months after surgery she ran another: the day before her 62nd birthday. That same year, she went on to compete in the Tennessee Senior Olympics, winning gold medals in three track and field events and a silver medal in a fourth event. At the Transplant Games of America in Birmingham, she earned silver medals in the 60M and 100M events. She is registered to compete in the 2026 Transplant Games of America in Denver, Colorado, where she will run the 100M, compete in the 5K, and perform two solo ballroom dances in June 2026. She was not able to attend the games this year due to illness..
Jennifer is the founder of Jennifer Parker Speaks, creator of the Patient Empowerment Toolkit co-authored with Nurse Practitioner Tameria Y. Williams. A proud Ambassador for Legacy of Hope Alabama, where she advocates for organ and tissue donation. A graduate of the Mic Drop Workshop; she has been featured on podcasts and a television segment on WVMT Channel 13 in Birmingham. She holds a Master of Education degree, which she completed during chemotherapy and radiation treatment in 2005.
Her signature talk, Navigating Care with Courage: How to Stand Up as an Advocate for Yourself and Your Loved Ones, has moved audiences to standing ovations and inspired listeners to register as organ donors, advocate for themselves, and never be three months late to their own lives.
Jennifer is available to speak to healthcare professionals, women’s leadership organizations, faith communities, corporate audiences, and anyone who has ever needed the courage to ask one more question in a room where no one expected them to speak up.
After her transplant, she decided to finish out the weddings she had on the books and become a speaker in an effort to spread my message of self- advocacy. She started in January this year and hopes to continue as long as she is able to Jennifer has also decided to put her story in writing to prayerfully reach a larger audience. She is currently working on a daily devotional book that she hopes to be available before the end of the year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once the decision was made to change providers, the road has been smooth. that decision literally saved my life. The advocacy that my new providers did for me saved my life. After 3 months, they knew they could not save me. They considered a pacemaker but instead consulted with UAB Medicine Heart Transplant Team: UAB Medicine advocated for me before I stepped in their building. My recovery was great! I was able to and with the providers blessing able to run a 5k 4 months after transplant. I wore a Donate Life shirt and was able to tell one person about my journey. She happened to be someone who had heart surgery, as well as her father and brother. She told me she couldn’t wait to tell them my story “They just want to sit around and do nothing; I can’t wait to tell them about you out here after 4 months of what you went through!” That was the conformation I needed. I became an Ambassador of Legacy of Hope Alabama after that. I continue to have great outcomes at each doctor’s appointment.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a transformational speaker. I am a 21-year stage IV breast cancer survivor and a heart transplant receipt. My talks center around self-advocacy, organ donor registration and breast cancer awareness. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I have lived through what I talk about. I am most proud that I started this journey and within a short time, I am making a difference in people’s’ lives!
I spent more than three decades serving in various positions of the clinical laboratory including Director and Laboratory Operations Manager, leading clinical teams through complex environments in the medical laboratory.
I retired early to grow Southern Sparkle Florals, my boutique floral design business that I built at age 54 with no previous experience, into a nationally published brand featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Southern Bride -twice, and other publications.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
For some reason at the most important time in my healthcare journey, I conceded. Not sure why but I just trusted the organization. I am grateful that my husband and daughter were there to fight for me. when I say fight, it’s not in a confrontational manner. You can be assertive, stand up for yourself and kind in the same tone of voice. I always mentioned that in my talks.
