Conversations with Jessie Magusen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Magusen.

Hi Jessie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Muay Thai about 20 years ago because I was looking for something new to try in my life. I took my 1st class and fell in love and after a month had my 1st fight. I had 56 fights in total as an amateur and professional and won 3 titles in 3 different weight classes. During this time I was also coaching.
When my last gym closed my business partner Chris Widlowski asked if I wanted to open a gym with him.
Chris is also a long time martial artist having competed in Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ.
So we went all in and about 60 days from the idea we opened our gym, Double Kick. It was a lot of hard work but we are extremely proud that in June we will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Doing any thing like this,I dont think is easy. I think that considering the fact that neither of us ever opened a gym before that there would always be some struggles. I think the biggest one was just knowing if we would even have members to begin with but thanks to our reputations in the sport we were able to have the necessary amount of students to feel confident opening the gym.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a Muay Thai gym. We train kids teens and adults. From day one to professional fighter we can help you reach your goals. I think we are known for gritty, technical fighters. I think personally for me I’m proud of the community we have created for our members. I think one of the things that sets us apart part is our experience and our attention to detail in our classes.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think that the biggest risk I took was the 1st day I went try out Muay Thai. I think taking that 1st step is the hardest part for anyone trying anything new. I’m glad I did because I learned that taking risks are just steps in your growth and it’s better to fail than to never know.
