Today we’d like to introduce you to John Widrick
Hi John, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My Story
Hello, my name is John Widrick. I had the privilege of growing up in an incredible family that modeled radical hospitality and a deep commitment to serving vulnerable children and families. From a young age, I watched my parents foster children and welcome adults into our home, creating an environment of love and care that profoundly shaped my life.
When I graduated high school at 19, I knew I wanted to follow that same path of serving the vulnerable. I began by creating weekly programming and outreach opportunities for families in need through my local church, which ignited a passion for community care and led to 20 years of pastoral ministry. During that time, I founded The Bridge Community Center in Johnson City, New York, which served kids and families in challenging circumstances.
My wife and I have also lived out this calling personally, by fostering and opening our home to youth in need during difficult seasons of their lives. In 2020, we moved to Wilson County, Tennessee, bringing that same heart and vision with us. Shortly after, we established The Bridge House in 2021—a nonprofit dedicated to providing transitional housing and support to youth aging out of the foster care system, as well as wraparound services for foster families.
Our mission at The Bridge House is to lead youth out of homelessness and empower them to live a life that inspires change in others. Since launching, we’ve been able to serve over 2,000 families in the middle, TN area. On May 1, we’ll be cutting the ribbon for our second location, which will provide transitional housing and case management for youth aging out of foster care ages 18 to 20 as they prepare for long-term independent living.
We are incredibly excited for the future. Our vision is to see Bridge House transitional housing established in every region of Tennessee, ensuring that no youth ages out of foster care without the support and resources they need to succeed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything of great significance or value will rarely have a smooth road. It’s the struggles along the way that shape who we are and test whether we truly believe in what we’re doing. Over the past 20 years of serving vulnerable youth and families, and especially with the launch of The Bridge House, we’ve faced plenty of challenges.
From zoning issues to fundraising obstacles, and even building relationships and partnerships with the state, it hasn’t always been easy. Each hurdle pushed us to dig deeper, rely on our faith, and keep moving forward. Through persistence, prayer, and the unwavering support of our community and local churches, we’ve been able to overcome these struggles.
Looking back, those tough seasons are what prepared us for the strides we’re making today. I truly believe that the foundation we’ve built will allow us to reach heights we never imagined for The Bridge House. The struggles weren’t setbacks—they were stepping stones toward something greater.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been in the nonprofit space for over 20 years, during which I’ve had the privilege of founding two organizations. The first, The Bridge, is a community center located in the heart of Johnson City, New York, that serves vulnerable children and families. The second, The Bridge House, is focused on providing transitional housing and support for youth aging out of the foster care system (ages 18-20) while also wrapping around foster and adoptive families with resources and care.
My educational journey includes biblical studies at Hillsong College in Sydney, Australia, and further studies at the New York School of Ministry. Over the years, I’ve developed expertise in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, marketing, and digital communication.
What I’m most proud of is the incredible community I’ve been a part of. None of this work would be possible without the people who have believed in our mission, walked alongside us, and supported us throughout the journey. From our team at The Bridge House to pastors, local community leaders, and mentors, they have all played an essential role in making this vision a reality.
What sets me apart as a leader is my commitment to accountability. I strongly believe that with greater influence comes the need for greater accountability. I’ve intentionally surrounded myself with coaches in every area of my life—marriage, business, communication, physical fitness, public speaking, and finances. These individuals speak truth into my life, challenge me, and help me grow so that I can be the best leader possible. As Craig Groeschel says, “The organization gets better when the leader gets better.”
For me, leadership is a journey of constant growth and intentionality, and I’m passionate about helping others rise to their potential while staying grounded in accountability and purpose.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is, first off, my faith in Jesus Christ, which has guided me my whole life. My family—I’ve been married for 16 years and have three amazing kids. And thirdly, I would say accountability, integrity, and humility.
