Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie.
Josie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I can’t remember a time when music wasn’t part of my life. I grew up surrounded by musicians and different generations of musical influences — from my parents and uncles, who introduced me to country music, to my brothers, who are guitarists with strong rock influences, and my grandfather, who played piano and accordion during the ragtime and boogie-woogie era. Growing up surrounded by so many different sounds naturally shaped the way I connect with music.
I started writing songs because I’ve always been drawn to storytelling. Over the years, I found my voice as a songwriter, guitarist, and singer, taking the time to learn, grow, and refine my craft. I’ve never been someone who wanted to rush the process. To me, a song has to feel authentic and truly resonate before it’s ready to be shared with the world.
A few years ago, one of my songs reached #1 on the radio. That experience showed me how powerful a song can be when it connects with people. Even so, I continued focusing on developing my songwriting, my musicianship, and finding my own artistic direction.
Today, I’m entering a new chapter. After spending years refining my writing, I finally feel ready to share the songs that truly represent who I am. Alongside my own artist project, I’m passionate about writing for other artists and collaborating with fellow songwriters. Becoming part of Nashville’s songwriting community has been an inspiring step in this journey, and I’m excited to finally share the music I’ve been creating and the stories behind my songs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been a straight line, but I believe every step has been part of the journey. One of my biggest challenges was learning to trust my own creative process.
A few years ago, I recorded a studio album that was ready to be released. I had invested a great deal of time, energy, and resources into that project, but something inside me kept telling me it wasn’t quite ready. There was something about the sound, the lyrics, and the overall feel that didn’t fully represent who I was as an artist.
Instead of rushing to release it, I decided to put it aside and continue growing. Over the years, I performed live, developed my artistry, explored my musical identity, and kept writing. I spent a lot of time behind the scenes refining my craft and building a much larger catalog of songs.
The biggest lesson I learned is that perfection doesn’t really exist in songwriting. What matters most is authenticity, emotion, and the story you’re trying to tell. Sometimes we can be our own biggest obstacle and our own toughest critic.
Looking back, I don’t regret taking that time. I believe stepping away allowed me to return with a clearer vision, stronger songs, and a better understanding of who I am as an artist and songwriter. Today, I feel like I’m finally sharing music that truly represents the person I’ve become.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself a songwriter first, but I’m also a singer and guitarist. For me, everything starts with the song—the story, the emotion, and the connection it can create with people.
Over the years, I’ve developed my craft through writing, performing, playing guitar, and exploring different musical styles to find my own sound. My music is rooted in storytelling, with pop, rock, and country influences. I’m drawn to honest songs that allow listeners to connect with the emotions behind the lyrics.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the body of work I’ve built over the years. I’ve taken the time to develop my writing and create songs that truly represent who I am instead of simply following trends. I believe in creating music with purpose and meaning.
What sets me apart is my commitment to the creative process. I don’t write songs simply to release music—I write because I have stories to tell. While I’m developing my own artist project, I’m equally passionate about writing for other artists and collaborating with fellow songwriters.
I’m fortunate to draw inspiration from different places and experiences. Splitting my time between Florida and Canada, along with my travels, gives me new perspectives, emotions, and environments that continue to inspire my creativity. Combined with my connection to Nashville’s songwriting community, these experiences are shaping this exciting new chapter of my journey as a songwriter and musician.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Nashville is a city I’ve heard about since I was very young. It’s a place that has been home to so many incredible musicians, songwriters, and creators who have shaped the world of music.
When I finally set foot in Nashville, I immediately felt inspired. There was something about the energy of the city that stayed with me. I left with my head full of ideas, and on the way home, I wrote two songs. Once I got back, I picked up my guitar and continued writing. It was one of those rare moments where you feel a spark of inspiration and everything starts flowing naturally.
What I love most about Nashville is the connection to songwriting and storytelling. For a songwriter and musician, there is something special about being surrounded by a place where music is part of the culture and where so many stories have been created.
I actually have a lyric in one of my songs that says, “Nothing Here Will Stay the Same.” To me, that feeling perfectly describes Nashville. You don’t leave this city exactly the same way you arrived. You take something with you — new ideas, new inspiration, new stories to tell.
The only thing I would say I like least is that there is never enough time to experience everything Nashville has to offer. Every visit leaves me wanting to discover more, meet more people, and continue being inspired by this incredible creative community.
