Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Pointer.
Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Justin Pointer, I am 31 years old. I’m happily married to Melony, with a 2 year old daughter named Myana. Went to the Alabama A&M University, where I graduated with my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Special Education Secondary, and also where I met Mel.
My business started as a spinoff from my Personal Training career.
I have always been the one to put the effort in to look presentable in the gym, even in high school. I always wanted to look good, to feel good, to lift well. I’m also Nike’s head. So I was always dressed head to toe in Nike. One day, I was like, “I want something exclusive from Nike…”
So… that thought, is actually what pushed me to start my brand. Because now, everything I wear or want is exclusive, ya know? Since I was always the one to tell my friends when they weren’t presentable in the gym, in a joking manner, why not give them something to wear?
What would I wear? What would I like to see them wearing? Now, I’m seeing it both in my gym and across the nation.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth. It is very much so more difficult than expected. Starting off as a small business owner, everybody isn’t fortunate to have investments or loans. I have struggled with accumulating inventory where the wait time for orders can be cut down.
Instead, most of my items are “by order,” unless I bit the bullet and ordered extra. Even if you do invest in inventory for a certain item, it is not a guarantee it will sell out and your profit. Now you’re stuck with 200+ wrist wraps, heh. Another struggle is the negative spirit of comparison.
It is so ugly because you try not to, but it’s hard to completely ignore it, and you’re like “what am I doing wrong?” Then there’s the biggest struggle to deal with, and that is the “support.” That is another large conversation within itself.
There is a smooth side, although. You do receive the support, customers are appreciative of your quality and effort, and your friends and family invest in you, it is such a great feeling.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As far as me running the clothing brand, I am a full-time high school teacher & part-time Personal Trainer.
So my specialty, I guess you can say, is me telling people what to do, lol. I eventually became known as the guy who is consistently working out early at the gym and always stayed “fresh.” I went to college here, so people were already familiar with me, and being around the youth because of teaching and coaching, I was sort of in touch with all ages.
I can say I’m most proud of actually doing it. Starting the business. I could have just stayed just a teacher. I could have just stayed as a teacher and trainer. Starting the clothing brand has opened more doors for me in both areas.
What sets me apart from others is that I am such a people person. I can get along well with almost anybody. I’m very understanding, and that goes a long way in dealing with people. My brand reflects that. It is affordable while also being of great quality.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That teaching is my day job. To take it a step further is that I am a Special Education teacher. Most people automatically assume I teach PE or something, because of my build and fitness background.
