Conversations with Kathryn Andres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Andres.

Hi Kathryn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to today?
After high school graduation, I thought about what type of education I was interested in continuing. At that time, I would use my free time to read beauty guru magazine articles. I completed my cosmetology license in 2008. I followed that my career started in many positions with Estée Lauder. That is where I became an expert in complexion undertones and intensities. Throughout my career with luxury cosmetics brands, I was often the guest makeup artist, teaching new employees and clients the techniques behind makeup application. I prided myself on makeup application with longevity. That led me to specialize in bridal styling. Bridal events start early and end late. A large part of exceeding a bridal client’s satisfaction is giving them a timeless look that lasts all night. Observing what I naturally am excited about related to cosmetics and beauty, I became the person who sought to teach women how to enhance their features and feels confident with makeup.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has flowed very well, meaning whenever one door closed, another door opened. However, it’s involved a lot of risk-taking. Choosing the path of a freelance artist in a world that doesn’t quite understand the many variables that go into artistry, at times, felt like I was chasing only a dream. Like I didn’t choose a “career.” Because I’ve always chosen to do what it takes to do fulfilling work, I’ve even had challenges myself doing art as a business. I’ve often enjoyed what I do as work so much that I undervalued myself and felt guilty for being paid to do what I love. Overall, where there is a great risk, there is a great reward. Obstacles and challenges show us where our priorities are and what we are energized to go the extra mile for.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an event stylist and beauty educator. I provide hair and makeup styling services for photographers, film, and events. I specialize in creating classic styles that are trending with elegance. As well as, I provide 1 on 1 and group lessons. Learn from the pro, customized for you. I teach technique and theory, as well as personal cosmetics shopping. I thrive in connection. What sets me apart from others is that I care about each client I work with and how they feel after working with me. I believe people remember how you make them think, and how they think is important to me. I strive for every client I connect with to feel confident and worthy.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
I view myself as a risk-taker. Just one year after working full-time with Estée Lauder at 20, I became a regional makeup artist. This meant I was no longer a full-time employee. In addition to building my resume and portfolio, I worked several part-time jobs. Pursuing my goals in makeup artistry and beauty brought out my free spirit. I have moved locations nearly 20 times. I am someone who prefers to have the experience rather than prejudge it. Through experience, I gather information to make decisions. A considerable risk I took was, leaving Nashville shortly after the pandemic lockdown. In April 2020, I bought a camper to stay in my hometown (in Ohio) for the summer. However, that summer led to me residing in Ohio for over a year. While in Ohio, I ultimately started over amid a pandemic that limited my work style. Through that change, I discovered my creativity in creating solutions and combined all my experiences to offer one on one and group masterclasses.
