Conversations with Kayla Harbin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Harbin.

Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband Gary Harbin has been in the plumbing trade since 2009. He worked with a local plumbing company in our community for just over 5 years. He knew early on that he, eventually, wanted to own his own company. We had our first daughter, Tatum, in August 2014. She was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 2 months old. This is a rare genetic disease that affects infants and children. This disease affects voluntary muscle movements such as eating, walking, and breathing. She passed away at the age of 6 months old after spending 10 days in the hospital battling, what most people call a common cold.

In 2015 we officially opened TLH Plumbing. Tatum Leigh Harbin is our reason and our why. We strive to have a family atmosphere within our company. We love our community, we appreciate all of our employees and our customers. Our team works hard to be able to provide quality service to all of our customers. As owners, we do our very best in making sure that our employees are taken care of and feel proud to work here and do their best. We started with 1 man in a truck in 2015 and have grown to 10 trucks and 20 employees today. We are proud to have each person on our team and so thankful that God allowed us to be a part of something so much greater than we could have ever imagined.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Growth is hard. Growing fast is sometimes that much harder. I would say that our struggle as owners, is making sure that we give ourselves that time to re-coop, and rest. Gary is the brains behind our entire operation and his wheels are constantly turning in all directions. Being someone with a Type A personality, I feel like we complement each other in a healthy way that provides a good balance within the business and our home.

Now, don’t be fooled, our stress level can go from 0-10 in a matter of seconds and we walk ourselves through those moments as they come. Our talks of business and growth never end. It is constant in our home. This alone does not allow too much time for regular day-to-day conversations which can sometimes be trying. We do our best to make sure we are present for each other, our kids, and our team. The best we can do is all we can do.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We provide residential and commercial plumbing services for the greater Nashville area. We also offer residential and commercial new construction plumbing and underground plumbing utilities.

I believe that we are known for making it right and that this is also what sets us apart from other small businesses like ours. If our techs or anyone on our team has done something that the customer feels was wrong or could have been done differently we not only, take that advice and do better the next time but we typically compensate that customer in a way that is fair for both parties involved. Obviously, we keep these mistakes to a minimum but we feel that owning to any mistake, big or small, having clear communication, and making it right is the best way to make sure that we continue to provide quality service and maintain those lifelong customers.

I am most proud of our team. They guys are the ones in the trenches and getting messy. I am thankful that they show up every morning willing to tackle the day despite what they might personally have going on in their own lives. They come to work and make this entire operation possible.
