Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Wright
Hi Kenny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been a musician based out of the Nashville area my entire adult life. While I never became what you’d consider a “household name”, I’ve been able to make a career for myself for the last four decades by touring all over and making records. It’s all I ever really wanted to do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Trying to make a living as a musician that plays music you create yourself is a very difficult journey. It’s hard enough to get a job as a “side guy”, so trying to sell your own wares and make a living doing original material is tough. Traveling is fantastic, but the grind can really take a lot out of you. Being away from your family and that sort of thing. There are a lot of distractions when you’re on the road. A lot of people looking to take advantage. Sycophants, etc. It’s not for everyone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started out as a guitarist and singer that wrote strictly rock songs. That was all I was interested in. While I liked all kinds of music, all I wanted to do was the big, loud guitar rock thing. I realized pretty quickly that, if you want to be and stay employed, you need to be less rigid. I started learning to play other instruments and switched over to playing drums, primarily. This afforded far more opportunities in terms of the gigs I was being offered. Over the years, I’ve been able to play with all kinds of artists doing all kinds of music. I’ve made many records with my own bands, as a solo artist and as a side musician. I don’t know that there’s anything that really sets me apart from the pack, but at this point in my life I continue to do this more to feed my soul than to fill my bank account. I just love music, and sometimes that’s enough.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think that, in most areas of a person’s life, you absolutely have to take risks. Be it changing jobs, getting married, having children or starting up a new business, sometimes you have to put yourself out there. Calculated risks are necessary. You can’t just watch the world go by and wait for something good to happen. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”, as tired as that adage may be, is a good rule of thumb. I’ve taken many risks in my personal and professional life. There have been some that backfired. There are also risks that, in retrospect, I wish I had taken and didn’t. But I’ve had a lot of wins, too.
