Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie Cait.
Hi Kenzie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I moved to Nashville from Buffalo, NY in 2021 to study music business at Belmont University. While at Belmont, I began doing writing sessions with the amazing producers and songwriters that I found myself surrounded by in Nashville. I started releasing music during my Sophomore year of college and dropped out to pursue music full-time before my Junior year. However, my musical journey began long before I attended Belmont. I grew up doing musicals and singing in basically any choir that would let me in. Since I could talk, I could sing… and I never really stopped!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t call it a “smooth road.” There are ups and downs to any artist’s career, and I sure have felt both. One moment it can feel like all of your wildest dreams are about to come true, and in another, it can feel like no one cares about you and what you have to say. I would say the whiplash from those highs and lows is one of the more challenging experiences I’ve had in my career so far.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make music that makes people feel understood. I am proud to make honest, vulnerable music derived from my personal life experiences. I think the way that I grew up gave me a unique perspective of the world, and that comes across in my music. I turned out to be fairly dramatic… but also delusionally optimistic! But, more than anything, I have a big heart. While that’s not always the blessing you’d imagine it to be, it sure does make for some good music. I think having a big heart sets me apart from others because I truly care so much about my music and about the people who love my music. Connecting with fans is the most magical part of this experience for me.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a fangirl. I loved the internet, pop culture, and music from a very young age. I was obsessed with Ariana Grande, which I think is apparent now. I probably spent way too much time roaming the internet freely, but I think that is a major part of why I am who I am today. I was also very academically driven. While I feel I’ve grown out of my perfectionist ways now, that was not the case in high school. I barely ever talked to boys in school because I was too focused on getting good grades… (that and I was terrified of them). Originally, I wanted to get into a really good school and work in medicine. It’s funny how things change! But throughout my childhood, I always loved music. I was known as the “singer” girl in school. Anything that had to do with music, I wanted to get my hands on.
