Conversations with Keterri Shuford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keterri Shuford.

Keterri, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Nurture House Group was created out of both lived experience and a clear gap I saw in our community. I’ve always had a heart for children and families, especially those navigating instability, academic challenges, or a lack of consistent support. Over time, I realized that many children weren’t struggling because they lacked ability they were struggling because they lacked access, structure, and encouragement in safe spaces.

We started Nurture House Group with the vision of being more than just a program, but a place of stability and care where children could be supported academically, socially, and emotionally.

Today, Nurture House Group continues to grow through the support of volunteers, sponsors, and families who believe in our mission. We’ve expanded our programming, strengthened community relationships, and remained committed to meeting children where they are while helping them reach their full potential. Our journey has been shaped by persistence, collaboration, and a deep belief that when children are nurtured consistently, their futures can change.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has not been a smooth one. Building Nurture House Group has required navigating limited resources, learning curves, and the reality of doing meaningful work in spaces where needs often outweigh funding.

Some of the early challenges included securing consistent funding, building awareness, and establishing trust within the community.

However, those challenges helped shape the organization into what it is today. They forced us to become adaptable, intentional, and deeply rooted in our mission. Each obstacle strengthened our systems, partnerships, and long-term vision. While the road has had its difficulties, it has also been incredibly rewarding, and every challenge has reinforced why Nurture House Group’s work is necessary and impactful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nurture House Group specializes in creating structured, nurturing environments where children can grow academically and personally. Our primary focus is literacy, because strong reading and comprehension skills are foundational to success in every area of life. We work intentionally to build literacy confidence while meeting children at their individual academic levels.

We incorporate financial literacy, life skills such as cooking and basic responsibility, and mentorship that emphasizes accountability, respect, and consistency. We hold our students to high expectations while providing the support they need to meet those expectations. Structure and stability are central to our programming, as many children thrive when clear routines and standards are in place.

What we are most proud of is our ability to offer individualized support. When a child needs extra help, we provide one-on-one tutoring and tailored guidance to ensure no one falls through the cracks. We are known for being hands-on, intentional, and deeply invested in each child’s growth.

What sets Nurture House Group apart is our balance of care and accountability. We nurture, but we also challenge. We create a space where children feel supported, valued, and safe, while also being encouraged to push themselves, develop discipline, and believe in their own potential. That combination is what allows our students not just to improve, but to truly thrive.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Consistency. Showing up reliably and maintaining high expectations builds trust with our students and families. That consistency, paired with intentional support, is what allows Nurture House Group to create lasting impact.
