Conversations with Lauren Powers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Powers.

Hi Lauren, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Donelson and grew up in Mt Juliet. Throughout my high school years, I always found myself doing friends’ and classmates’ hair and makeup for special occasions. As soon as I graduated, I enrolled at The Salon Professional Academy and became a part of the first class to ever graduate from there. After leaving school I eventually found the salon that I would be at for almost 10 years until I decided to open my salon Moxie & Mint.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some roadblocks along the way. I stayed at my first salon longer than I should have, part of it was because of being comfortable and the other part was my own anxiety. Leaving was the scariest thing I have ever done but has been the most rewarding.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I absolutely love doing color! Blonding and creative color are definitely where my passion is. There is nothing better than getting to see the fruits of your labor after a 3-hour service and a happy guest in your chair. I think the thing I’m most proud of is taking the leap of faith to open my own business. As far as what sets me apart? I honestly think it’s my ability to listen to the needs of my guest and create a safe space for them to feel comfortable.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have some amazing people that sit in my chair and have been willing to share their wealth of knowledge with me. Other than that social media has always been a major asset.
