Conversations with Lindsay Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Schultz.

Hi Lindsay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Spine Bookshop started in a small upstairs office in my home. It was just me, a handful of shelves, and a dream I’d carried with me for as long as I can remember. I’ve always wanted to open a bookshop—it’s been a lifelong goal rooted in my love of stories, words, and the belief that books can change lives.

From that humble home setup, I moved into a shared retail space with other vendors. It gave me a chance to connect with the community and test the waters in a more public setting. Eventually, I was able to move into the current space The Spine Bookshop calls home—a space fully dedicated to books, conversation, and community.

From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to focus on local and independently published authors. I believe deeply in giving a platform to voices that are often overlooked by traditional publishing, and in creating a space where readers can discover something new, something bold, and something real.

Today, The Spine is more than just a bookstore—it’s a gathering place, a safe space, and a quiet form of resistance in a world where books are increasingly challenged. It’s been a journey of growth, grit, and gratitude—and I’m just getting started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all—but every bump along the way has taught me something valuable.

Finding my niche was one of the biggest early challenges. I knew I wanted to focus on local and independent authors, but figuring out how to make that vision sustainable took time. Getting authors to trust me to sell their books was a learning process in itself—building those relationships, proving my commitment, and showing that a small, independent shop could be both dependable and passionate.

Learning how to actually run a bookstore—from inventory and marketing to events and community outreach—was overwhelming at first. Reaching readers, getting the word out, and showing people what made The Spine Bookshop different was a constant trial-and-error process. I had to stay open to shifting ideas, new strategies, and unexpected opportunities. When something didn’t work, I learned to pivot, adapt, and try again.

Over time, I’ve built a strong and loyal base of readers and authors who believe in what I’m doing. That trust didn’t happen overnight—it came from consistently showing up, staying authentic, and refusing to give up. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At The Spine Bookshop, I specialize in curating a collection that champions TikTok authors, local voices, and independently published writers—the kinds of storytellers who don’t always get space on mainstream shelves but have powerful stories to tell. I’m also becoming known as a safe haven for banned and challenged books, because I believe fiercely that the right to read is a fundamental freedom, not a privilege.

What sets my shop apart is our unwavering focus on inclusivity, representation, and discovery. I want every person who walks through my door to feel seen. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just starting to fall in love with books, you should be able to find a story that speaks to you—one that reflects your identity, challenges your thinking, or simply brings you joy.

I’m most proud of the relationships and trust I’ve built with both readers and authors. There’s something powerful about creating a space where people feel welcome, respected, and excited to explore new voices. I don’t just sell books—I advocate for access, connection, and community. That’s what I’ve built at The Spine, and it’s what drives me every single day.

I don’t want the bookshop to just be a place to buy books—I want it to be a home for readers and writers alike.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
It’s easy—just reach out! Anyone interested in working with me or collaborating can email me directly at thespinebookshop@gmail.com. Whether you’re an author, a fellow business owner, or a community member with an idea, I’m always happy to connect, learn what you need, and find ways we can support one another.

If you’d like to support our Banned Book Brigade—a program I created to provide free banned books to anyone who wants them—you can Venmo the shop at @thespinebookshop. 100% of those donations go directly toward purchasing banned or challenged books, which we then give away to readers who need them.

You can also support the shop in general by donating through the same Venmo. Every contribution—no matter the size—helps us grow, stay open, and continue uplifting local authors, independent voices, and the broader reading community. Your support allows us to remain a safe, inclusive, and passionate space for all kinds of readers.
