Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe Loughran
Hi Moe, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello 🙂 I’m a graduate of Belmont in voice performance. I wrote with Sony/ATV for about 4 years, toured, played all the festivals like SXSW, Woodstock 99 and even won an AMA in 2003. I was an artista and writer first and then I became a coach which sometimes just lets you into the mindset a bit more clear. I also work with about 10 film and tv houses and have written music that has been on national ads and promos for HULU, NBC, ABC, CBS, NFL, Snickers, etc. I have been coaching voice and songwriting now for almost 12 years. I can truly say this is my life’s work. I have everyone from littles that have done Disney tracks to signed artists to middle age people just trying to find their voices. Singing is something for literally everyone…you don’t have to be the weekend or signed or even a recording artist—You just have to love it. That is the beginning and the end of it. I only want to be int he room of coaching if I can be of service, To help others truly find the beauty of their voice. It makes me feel like I knocked it out of the park when they start to love their gift.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No…if anyone says it’s easy for them..they are lying. I have worked 4-6 jobs even when I was signed. When I decided to go into coaching I thought my credentials would be enough — and that’s just not how it works. People have to trust you and the only way to do that is to EARN their trust. Through every good thing is a million little stones you have to step on, overcome and realize it’s not the short run but the long hike to finding happiness in what you do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most proud of helping people fall in love with the voice that they have been given. You don’t have to have all the “double axels” and runs and range…you have to be 100% you in all the things that you do. Helping people to not compare..which is just human nature…is one of my main goals. I had a student who did not have pitch recognition, struggled with even LIKING his voice and we worked really hard—HE worked really hard. He is an AMAZING actor but needed this bit to help him be the triple threat (acting, dancing and singing). I can proudly say he did it! He is a student at NYU! I have another one that her choir teacher had demoralized her to the point where she was hardly singing at all. Unique voices are a GIFT. But if you are not nurtured, you will feel inadequate. By her mother’s encouragement and her hard work, we got her to understand and use that unique, amazing wonderful like “butter” voice now at Berkeley school of music where she is not only singing, but producing. There are artists that are signed — the golden ticket — that still struggle with self acceptance and their right to hold space in this medium of sound—I am here to help encourage, strengthen and uplift those voices.
What’s next?
I am going to be working with two power houses to offer a TEEN writing camp in nashville in April. I am so excited. It will be a one day workshop April 5th at HOME. I’m excited to see where this will go. When I was writing as a teen I didn’t have a whole lot of understanding of collaboration and hook writing so it should be super fun! I am also continuing my training with somatic method. I hope to bring even more tools to the sessions that I have been coaching at places like blackbird and the sound emporium. I feel like right now…my job—my one job—is to uplift artists. That’s it.
