Conversations with Molly Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Brown.

Hi Molly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
As a New York Native, I found my way down to Nashville because of the music scene. I started singing down on Lower Broadway and have written over 100 songs since moving here. Recently I started auditioning for some of the theater companies here in Nashville and have been beyond grateful to work with so many different casts and companies. My most recent show was rent with Nashville Repertory. In this production, I was a featured ensemble member and the dance captain for the show. Next, I have The Marvelous Wonderettes with Williamson County Performing Arts Center, where I will play Betty Jean. After that, I will be in the World Premiere of White Elephant playing the role of Jess! At a young age, I was bit by the theater bug and always loved singing along to musical theater tracks in the car with my mom! I have always found live theater to be exhilarating and so fulfilling. I love being a storyteller and bringing these characters to life. I went to Wagner College as an undergrad and got my BA in Theater Performance. I also finished my Master’s in Social Work, a wonderful learning experience that has helped me grow in many ways. I hope to tour the world and find ways to continue to share my passion and love for live entertainment!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every road is different, and while there have been many bumps along the way, these have helped cultivate the human I am today. After losing my dad at age 17, I had a lot of obstacles to work through. Instead of letting this define my path, I used it to help me relate to others and grow emotionally. Sometimes the challenges can be the inner intrusive thoughts that tell you; you’re not good enough to be here. Other times it can be the criticism you receive from teachers, friends, or even family. I get to choose what I believe, and deep in my heart, I know that I am good enough and I belong on the stage.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I take my work and my craft very seriously. I find that acting is what I am best at. I am known for taking direction well and applying my whole self to whatever character I am playing. On top of acting, I also love to sing and dance. While I may not be the most talented in the room, I am definitely the one who works hard and never stops finding ways to improve myself. My want and ability to learn new things is what sets me apart from others.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I feel that my industry has a lot of growth coming. We have made small steps in making the entertainment industry more inclusive and genuinely believe that more change is coming. We must continue to hold companies accountable and make intelligent choices for ourselves as entertainers and those we work with!

I’m very proud of you! You’ve navigated your life to what makes you, you! I know we haven’t met in person but being friends with your mom and was friends with your dad (who was a member of my wedding party) I know your roots are planted firm in the ground. Follow your dreams! Congratulations on your success!
