Today we’d like to introduce you to Russ Harrington.
Hi Russ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been a photographer for more than 40 years. Growing up in Middle Tennessee, I discovered photography while I was a student at Antioch High School and quickly became passionate about the craft. After studying photography at Middle Tennessee State University, I built a career photographing musicians, entertainers, and commercial clients. Over the years I’ve photographed more than 750 album covers, worked in 48 states and several countries, and had my images appear on national magazine covers.
Throughout my career, I’ve always enjoyed creating unique environments where people can tell their stories through photographs. That passion eventually led me to create Canopy, an outdoor photography park in Chapel Hill, Tennessee. Canopy combines my decades of experience behind the camera with a desire to give photographers, content creators, and families a beautiful and inspiring place to create images of their own.
Looking back, what started as a fascination with a camera in high school grew into a lifelong career and continues to evolve through new creative projects like Canopy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the main struggles in my career came when, after 25 years of shooting film, I had to convert to digital when it took over.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Nashville-based celebrity and music photographer. My portfolio includes some of the most recognizable names in music — Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Nicole Kidman, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, and many more. I have shot over 800 album covers.
I am best known for beauty lighting — a signature style I developed early in my career while shooting fashion ads for a high-end Nashville department store.
One of my most iconic shots is probably the portrait of Loretta Lynn and Jack White for the Grammy-winning album Van Lear Rose.
Most recently, my family and I created Canopy, an outdoor photography park located on our property just south of Nashville. Drawing from more than four decades behind the camera, we designed a collection of custom photo sets and creative spaces to give photographers of all experience levels a unique place to create.
