Conversations with Ryan Surratt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Surratt

Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Ausden Inc back in 2012 as a small custom wood working company. We started out tearing down barns all over Tennessee and building with the reclaimed wood into mixed use furniture. We have evolved over the past 12 years into a furniture company with “cleaner lines “ furniture and work with Residential clients, Interior Designers, Architects, and Commercial firms all over the United States. We also have worked with International companies as well on some pretty cool projects.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think there is any small business owner / Entrepreneur that hasn’t had to make some pits stops and recalibrate the compass . That’s part of being a business owner. The biggest lesson is learning along the way and staying ahead of the curve.

One of our biggest hurdles has been staying relevant in furniture design when there are now so many players in the game and trying to compete with Big box stores. I always tell people we aren’t Restoration Hardware or IKEA. If you’re looking for quick and cost effective , a lot of times custom furniture is not the route for you. Also we have had to shift in a Post Covid world, when many companies shifted from In office to work from home environments which changed the needs for their offices and not needing that 16 conference table project anymore.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We build custom furniture . If you think of it we have probably built it or attempted to build it. We specialize in high end conference tables , bar restaurant build outs, all the way down to custom residential projects . I am most proud of still being open 12 years now and still having amazing repeat clients that keep coming back to us. We value every client but repeat clients are why we have been sustainable. I’m also proud of the projects we have been a part of all the way from East Coast (NYC) to West Coast , and Texas all the way into Canada. What sets us apart from other companies is being able to listen to our clients and come up with innovative designs and bring them to life without them having to take out a second loan to pay for them.
