Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Wilson.
Hi Samuel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Sam, I’m 30, I’m an electronic music producer and DJ in Nashville TN. My personal music project is called SVBLE, pronounced sable. I began playing music at a very young age. I was homeschooled and it was part of our curriculum. I originally learned classical guitar starting at age 7, then picked up the drum set around age 13. I played in church and small bands here and there during high school and college. However, during college, I got introduced to electronic music. I started listening to artists like Skrillex and Flux Pavillion and fell in love with the music. I had always wanted to be a musician but when I experienced this music, I finally figured out what kind of music I wanted to create. So, in 2014 I started finding ways to start making beats on the internet just to start trying things out. And I couldn’t stop so later that year for my birthday I got a small loan for a Mac book pro and ableton and started my journey into electronic music production and writing. I spent the first 5 years working on a project that was called “Achilles” which focused on emulating and creating heavy dubstep music with high energy levels. I spent a lot of time learning during those first 5 years and most of it was learning what not to do. But at the beginning of the pandemic, I realized that I was creating music that didn’t feel genuine to the person I was anymore. I had become disconnected to the old project and needed something fresh to help find new inspiration. So that’s how this new project SVBLE came into being. The pandemic while unfortunate was a good time for me to really hone my skills and I was able to keep up my inspiration thankfully and started to figure out the kind of sound and vibe I wanted to go for. During that time, I was able to write my first EP “Chroma//Shift” which released last year. Kind of in conjunction with my EP release, a couple of friends and I did a mini-tour around the mid-south US which was a lot of fun. As the world has returned to normalish I have been privileged to perform several times as local support for several touring electronic artists that have stopped through Nashville. I took this past winter off of performing to focus on finishing up the music I want to release for this year, and now it feels like things are back in full swing. I have a couple of cool shows coming up and releasing new music April 19 so I’m very excited about the present and future!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. It’s interesting as I continue to gain more experience, I realize that I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started down this path. Life tends to throw curve balls just because it can. So, I have had my fair share of struggles due to that. But also, I have had to overcome a lot of personal struggles as well. Becoming a fully-fledged human adult is not easy and I took my time at doing it, unfortunately. But I’m proud of the progress that I have made and try to be better every day. For a long time, I complained a lot about not getting the things I thought I deserved. But I realized my situation was a direct result of my own actions. So, I started to change my actions and my situation started to change as well. It seems simple I know, but it took a while for me to understand that for myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make crazy music on my laptop, and it’s a lot of fun. I use a program called Ableton on an old MacBook pro. I play DJ sets to perform said music which can also be a lot of fun because they span all genres and tempos. I try to keep it energetic and make you move but also tell a story and take you on a journey. At the moment I’m kind of focusing on futuristic melodic sound design. My friends say that my music sounds like big pretty space cannons if I can describe it haha. I’m really proud of the storytelling side/aspect that I add to the music. It’s fun to have something you create have a cool back story. People love a good story and it just adds an extra layer of connectivity to the music.
What do you think about luck?
I believe that you make your own luck. Be the person you need to be to do the things that you want to do, and things will work out I think, but ultimately what do I know lol
