Today we’d like to introduce you to Sokeara Chem.
Hi Sokeara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first started doing my first freelance makeup gigs by booking through friends and families for events, weddings, birthday parties. Then I decided to really improve my business by going to get licensed as an esthetician. I knew while I was in there i immediately wanted to get out and start taking this serious. While I was in school I started freelancing in a retail setting for different makeup brands. This really allowed me to explore different formulations work on every skin tone in store which all in all really helped me in my craft. Today, I still appreciate those days and I appreciate everyone who’s helped or supported me along the way. From facials, to waxing, to brow tint and laminations, to leveling up to pro makeup. I learned to be a jack of all trades over time and I can’t thank mentors and friends that I met in my journey enough. Everyday I’m still learning everyday I get excited, I am exactly where meant to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think now that I’ve done this for a few years it’s a different feeling. When I was in school it was definitely hard. Working shorter hours while going to school for what I wanted definitely took a toll on my personal life/ work balance. Bills were hard to pay. I thought during that time that time was taking forever and I was absolutely behind everyone else. What I have learned is your never behind. Life is always what you make it. Live the life you love even if it means sitting out on fun in the moment just to get there. And watch the universe reward you. I also learned to never say no. Yes sometimes it gets exhausting and yes absolutely be strict about boundaries in your line of business. But every little moment you get to learn, be outside your comfort zone and make money doing what you love is absolutely a gift many can’t actually say.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Nashville TN based Pro MUA. I work on set, bridal services, galas, birthday events, just anything you can think of. I’m known for my speciality in elevated soft glams. What sets me apart from most muas in the city is I’m a licensed esthetician. I take pride in prepping clients before their big day. I want everyone who sits in my chair know that the service will only go well if we absolutely understand each other and I see YOUR vision of how you want to look. My biggest priority and joy is meeting new people, learning about them, making them feel beautiful and being able to call them a lifelong client after.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success differently through every stage of my life. I think it’s one of those things that are forever changing according to what season of change you are in your life. To me, my ability to change my schedule and work in different places all the time make me feel like I have a purpose and it’s even better when I leave knowing they are happy with what I curated for them. Success is also again that work/life balance. The freedom to work and do what I love everyday and going to meet with friends and family afterwards is a privilege I won’t ever take for granted. Getting to share your success while listening to others successes uplifts me and makes me want to become a better person everyday. I want to live knowing that I’ve made an impact on not only my clients but my friends and loved ones.
