Conversations with Successfully Unsigned

Today we’d like to introduce you to Successfully Unsigned

Hi Successfully, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Dale and David are audio engineer majors who met through school and both create their own music. Patrick is close friends with Dale and had his own radio show on 88.3 WMTS at Middle Tennessee State University. The three of us were interested in starting a podcast and decided it should be based around music with our backgrounds. We wanted to create a show discussing the hardships of being a small unsigned artist and how you push through to succeed. We, especially Dale and David, are going through the same process and look for different topics to discuss about the industry whether it be about branding, performance, writing, etc. We provide three different perspectives of looking at the music industry: David looks at it from an artist POV, Dale looks at it from an engineer POV, and Patrick looks at it from an audience POV. Since we have started our show, we have included guest interviews and small live performance sessions. We have networked through going to local shows and meeting other artists in the community. Since then we have created a small community that boosts small artists and their careers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have had a lot of good experiences along the way. We have grown each season and included more and more people on our show. It helps that we had a lot of the equipment already and tech experience. The struggles we have faced have mostly been time related and financial. Our first season we were not very consistent and struggled juggling our day jobs and the podcast. However, since then we have adapted and kept a much more consistent schedule. We luckily had a lot of equipment already, and we would like to upgrade to improve our quality, but unfortunately equipment is expensive. However, we make do with what we have and we know that with consistency we will continue to grow and have the opportunity to get more equipment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a music podcast dedicated to helping rookie artists build a platform for themselves. We provide multiple perspectives when examining an artist/the music industry in general. We look at the music industry from an engineer/producer lens, an artist lens, and from an audience perspective. We give “professional advice from unprofessionals”. The best thing to come from our podcast that we are most proud of is the community we have created from supporting local artists. We love to promote artists and their music and in return they support us. It is so important to create a supportive community within the music industry. Our show is different from other podcasts because of the genuine care we give to our audience and guests. We put in hours and hours of research into our guest interviews and incorporate a tiny-desk style performance for the artists. The utmost important aspect of our show is that our podcast makes people feel safe and cared for.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We started two years after COVID, but we have seen the effects from COVID on the music industry. People are much more excited to go to live shows and have seen how fleeting life can be and now is the time to follow your passions and create music. We are here to support those aspirations and help our fellow artists.
