Conversations with Tatum Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatum Hill.

Hi Tatum, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I truly believe my passion for design is a gift the Lord blessed me with. I genuinely love what I do, and I feel incredibly grateful that I get to turn something I’ve always loved into a career.

My mom recognized creativity in me early on and gave me room to explore it, letting me “remodel” my childhood bedroom. It was pretty awful, but I learned so much through that process. I still have the one yard of fabric she let me buy from Hobby Lobby 26 years ago (it was $20/yard…sooo high-end at the time).

While I was in college, my mom and grandmother passed away in a car accident. Fumbling through that kind of loss and grief changed me deeply, and made taking risks feel less scary. Starting a business, renting my first office, buying a building for our studio, hiring employees – all of those things felt intimidating, but failing them wouldn’t have held a candle to the loss I had already experienced. I would tell myself often, “If you can survive that awful thing, then this is a piece of cake. Just keep trying.” It may sound odd, but that mindset helped me not let pride or the fear of failure keep me from moving forward.

Over the years, our business has grown tremendously, along with my team, and one of the greatest blessings of my career has been learning to trust my team and allow them to use their gifts well. They constantly push me outside my comfort zone and help refine the way we serve our clients and operate as a business. We are a close-knit team that truly enjoys working together, and I honestly could not, and would not, love this career as much as I do without them – or without my loving, encouraging, and supportive husband and kids.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. One of the hardest seasons was during Covid. At the time, we were renting a studio space and had just purchased a new space that was in the middle of a complete renovation. I had also just hired a new full-time employees, was navigating uncertainty in the industry, and raising young kids at home. I remember feeling like I was dropping the ball everywhere all at once.

There were moments where I genuinely didn’t know what the next step was supposed to be, but we kept showing up, kept working hard, and kept trusting that the hard seasons wouldn’t last forever. Looking back now, those difficult seasons stretched us in ways that ultimately made our business and our team stronger.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a full-service interior design studio focused on creating homes that feel deeply personal, intentional, and lived in – not just beautiful. We love curating spaces that reflect the people who live there and aim to make a house truly feel like home. My personal home is my safe space. I want others to get to experience that same joy in their own home and to truly love where they live.

I hope what sets us apart is the level of care we bring to both the design process and the client relationship. We really take time to get to know our clients well and understand how they live, what matters to them, and how they want their spaces to feel. We care a lot about finishing the project well and not leaving the last 5% undone. Those final details matter!

What I’m most proud of, without question, is our team. It feels more like a family than a workplace, and I feel incredibly blessed by each person who is part of it. Watching people use their talents and serve our clients with kindness and excellence has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. I was raised in a family that valued hard work and showing up for one another. We all helped because that’s what you do when you’re part of a team, and I think that mindset shaped me tremendously. Being willing to work hard, fail, learn, and try again has opened many doors for me over the years.

Some of the people we work with today are clients I first worked with over 12 years ago, when I was very much still learning. It feels like we’ve grown together over time, and the fact that they trusted us enough to hang in there in the early years, and come back now, means so much to me. It’s one of the greatest blessings of this business!
