Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Lyons.
Hi Taylor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved movies, I grew up watching black and white movies then gradually shifted into color because my parents were classic film lovers… so it made sense that I developed a passion for film as well. I first started acting in school plays, hoping my parents would let me go out for community theatre or local films.
It wasn’t until I took things into my own hands and searched out opportunities online that I finally booked a small role in a feature film, with one of my dad’s favorite actors, which made my parents come around to where they offered to drive or ride with me to those auditions that were hours away.
Since then, I’ve never looked back and have been blessed to have had some amazing opportunities and people come into my life that has acted as stepping stones, leading me to places and experiences I never even dreamed of.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve had to face in the pursuit of my dreams is my own ego. Not in the sense that I think I’m better than everyone else but in the sense of self-consciousness and taking things personally.
When I realized that casting isn’t an objective thing, so many doors opened that relieved so much stress in auditioning and even in my personal life and friendships.
I think this was the biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome mentally, and I still find myself having to keep it in check because in the film the production isn’t about me or anyone else, it’s about the audience and the story and what best serves both.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actor, as that has always been my passion, but recently I have been dabbling in some behind-the-camera aspects of filmmaking with a little directing and producing-which has given me so much more respect for how any production comes together.
I think the works that I have been most proud of are the Alien: Alone film I was in for Fox’s 40th Anniversary celebration, and a feature film I first time produced and performed in called Flight 704, hopefully coming out this fall.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Aside from thinking outside of yourself, I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is just the mindset of gratitude and abundance. These things really reduce the need for constant striving and help you focus on what you already have, what really matters, and the doors that are being opened to you that would otherwise have been missed by the noise of constant “I need to do everything all the time to get anywhere.”
So in that sense, having the mindset of abundance and thankfulness, allows you to thrive because you are open to things coming to you, not chasing things. My family says I’ve become a bit of a ‘hippie’ on this career path but that is alright by me! I just strive for excellence in the things that I do and don’t stress about the things that were not meant for me… because if it’s meant for you it will not pass you by. All you have to do is be open and say yes.
