Conversations with Trail Sisters Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Moorman. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Trail Sisters was founded in 2016 by Gina Lucrezi out of Colorado as an online journal to amplify women’s voices in the trail running and hiking community. Its mission is to increase women’s participation and opportunity in trail running and hiking through inspiration, education, and empowerment. Since 2016, Gina has worked tirelessly to provide more resources, outlets, and access wherever possible.

Now, through “local” groups like the Nashville one Amber Thienel and I created in late 2018/early 2019 and co-lead, our goal is to host trail runs, hikes, volunteer trail work, gear swaps, and other social events to strengthen the women’s trail community locally and help breakdown any barriers that may hinder a woman from finding and being comfortable on the trail. We’re also supported by the work Gina puts in day in and day out with securing partnerships (like HOKA), online educational resources, opportunities for retreats, and contributions to the journal, just to name a few.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We are extremely thankful to be able to co-lead the Nashville group. It’s not that we know the most, or are the most experienced, or are the fastest, but rather that we stepped up when Gina asked if we wanted to start a group to help carry her mission into our local community. We want to do what we can to help women find the trail and explore what they’re capable of.

Of course, with all of us being human and unique, there will be differences of opinion in how we do our events or have to stay true to the structure of this being a national (and really international) organization. While that can be tough to work through sometimes, we try to always hold space for everyone’s thoughts and for us to learn and grow, as well. Overall, though, I can easily say this has been such a fun and rewarding journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Trail Sisters and Trail Sisters Nashville is for any woman looking to find community on the trails, regardless of experience or pace. Even if not during a Trail Sisters-led event, many local women have been able to connect through our group and go out on their own adventures or share experiences, suggestions, or advice. Also, there are now over 170 local groups all over the US and internationally, which makes it easy (and fun!) to meet other women who love the trails when you’re traveling or if you happen to move to a nearby town.

In 2023, we’re of course looking forward to more trail runs and hikes. In addition to that, Amber is going to lead us through another book club session (we did a virtual one during the height of the pandemic and it was a blast), and we’re hoping to plan a camping/running/hiking trip in the late Spring!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?

Wow, this is a big question. In the grand scheme of life, I always want to ask myself: how am I contributing to my community and the environment around me? It is not always easy, and it can be quite stressful. At the end of the day, though, if I’m contributing positively while also remaining true to my values, I can say I’m happy. I think having two kiddos at home helps me keep this in perspective, too – community, environment, and that we’re all human and will never be short on opportunities for growth. Being on the trail and out in nature also provides frequent reminders of how we’re just a small piece of the fabric of the world and the universe, yet we can still impact it greatly.
