Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Herrin.
Hi Will, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to Nashville in 2013 as a freshman at Belmont University studying music business. There I made many valuable friends and connections. I played all sorts of music during that time. Aside from my guitar playing, I had a stint as a bass player, drummer, singer, and would start to take my song writing more seriously. I graduated from Belmont in December 2017. It was then that I started fiddling around with a mandolin that was on the wall of a house that belonged to one of my roommates at the time. I learned enough chords to accompany myself on some of the songs I was writing on guitar. Eventually I would jam on mandolin with one of my friends from Belmont (Alex King) who had also been writing songs. We thought we had a good thing between us so we kept jamming. In not too much time we would be joined by a violin player (Matt Rennick) who was already a bona virtuoso. We started posting videos on the internet of us playing and folks seemed to be really into it, and we got really excited about that. We decided to name the band Sicard Hollow and were on a mission to find a bass player. We would have two bass players before we met (Parrish Gabriel) in 2019, a funk driving also virtuosic slapping machine. Our strategy at the beginning was saying yes to every gig that came our way regardless of pay or circumstances. We were just hungry to play. By the end of 2020 we signed with our first agency that sent us on a nationwide tour. It was a dream come true. Since then we’ve been running all around the country playing our music year after year. Seeing places we never thought we would.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road less traveled is never easy. We’ve experienced our share of hardships as all bands do. But you can’t help but think how lucky you are to get to live this life. Perspective is huge. Balance is key.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My band is Sicard Hollow is my baby and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished over the years. My mandolin playing is something I’m very proud of. I also play guitar with Nashville artist Sloejack which has also been a lot of fun to be a part of.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was an explorative kid with ADHD. I always loved music and from an early age knew it was something I wanted to do forever.
