Cort Dingman’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cort Dingman. Check out our conversation below.

Cort, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day either consists of rehearsals for one of my five bands, writing when i have down time, working a shift at my restaurant job, or spending time with friends.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cort Dingman, I’ve become involved in the DIY/alternative scene increasingly over the past couple years. My main project is Sour Tooth, a 90s post-hardcore inspired project, but i’m in a few other bands by the names of: Also, Fate Chimera, and Briefskin. These projects range from post-rock, to mathy screamo, to noisy grindcore. I’ve also begun throwing shows at my house, under the name “Cavity”. The scene here is overwhelmingly supportive and full of talented and creative individuals that i’ve become great friends with.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Growing up I feel like I was always encouraged to have a strong work ethic, in whatever is i’m doing. In my music, in my relationships, even in my meaningless line cook job. My dad was one person that really instilled that mindset within me which i’m thankful for. Once I moved to Nashville on my own, it was more so my goals and aspirations that pushed me to work my hardest, as opposed to a specific person. I’ve had to hold myself accountable more than I did before and it’s been a valuable lesson in independence and drive, and I wouldn’t be where I am if i didn’t have that.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No. There were times that were hard for sure, but giving up would be infinitely more of a loss than to keep going.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Always

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I just want to be remembered for creating genuine art that inspires people, and for being a person who cares deeply about those around me, art, and the fostering of community.
