Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex English.
Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started singing when I was about eight years old which developed into learning guitar at twelve and writing at thirteen. From there, I continued to perform live and by sixteen I was performing three-hour sets throughout the tri-state area.
Through this journey, I have met numerous friends in the music scene and industry. From a very early age, I was exposed to music production and learned quickly how important it is to be self-sufficient. I continued to perform and develop my sound with the mentoring from different industry experts throughout the way.
There is nothing more important to me than investing in yourself and becoming your own powerhouse. That “do it yourself” spirit is vital to have because it allows you to be your own person. When you rely only on yourself, you can push past boundaries and rise to be everything you are capable of.
Over the years, I continued my education starting at my local community college, then transferring to Pace University receiving my BBA in Arts & Entertainment Management as well as completing my MBA in Marketing Management. I also continued my education in music completing my RSL Grade 8 certification in music production focusing primarily on the DAW, Ableton.
Each milestone, whether it be releasing each of my four albums, landing my first publishing deal and placement, and setting my musical mind free with the skills of music production, mixing, and mastering, has developed me to be the person and songwriter I am today.
Along with being a musician and songwriter, I also work as a Marketing Lead for a specialty chemicals company.
Recently, I have found myself in Nashville rekindling old relationships and taking my songs on a trip to a new scene.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing you’re navigating through is an easy road. I have been through many ups and downs, however having a level head and managing expectations is what keeps you on track to be successful.
Again, no one can take away your education and your abilities. Some people can try their best to hide your sparkle, but a friend once told me, that no matter how long it may take “cream always rises to the top…” and that’s the truth.
Being a solo act is difficult in its own right, however, I have experienced issues throughout my career being a FEMALE solo act as well. I also started young, so industry and even local “veteran musicians” weren’t the most supportive bunch of individuals. I can’t speak for all, but enough to put a few bumps in my road.
I am grateful for every mountain and every bump I encountered. I would not be the person I am today without it and in the end, it made me a better musician and songwriter.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I define myself as a songwriter and I am grateful to have the ability to perform the songs I hear in my head. I own and work under my LLC “Alex English Music LLC” singing, performing, writing, and producing music.
Through my LLC, I produce and write for film/television through my publisher when placement opportunities become available. As an “artist” you also have to be a “business” professional. Having a well-rounded understanding of all the moving pieces attached to an album or single is critical for its success, in today’s world more than ever.
In my professional life, I work as a Marketing Lead for a specialty chemicals company. Every time you think you know something, there is always more! That’s what I enjoy so much about marketing and marketing for different industries.
You never know the little nuggets of information you will end up learning and growing your overall skillset.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always a quiet kid. Honestly, if it wasn’t for music I don’t know how I would’ve turned out! Music really pushed me out of my shell and developed me into someone who isn’t scared to kick-start a conversation with a stranger.
In a way, when you’re performing on a regular basis you perfect small talk, which is half the battle when you’re as shy as I was (and still am in some instances).
I don’t think you ever stop growing up, I can look back and say I was this or that, but in reality, many of my tendencies still exist, they’re just refined. My personality is still me, now a little wiser, my interests still consist of music and crafts (I love crocheting!), and my itch to learn new things is as strong as ever.
I don’t think I grew up, I think I grew into myself… and I still am.
