Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Sullivan.
Hi Alice, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started editing and writing professionally only a few months after graduating college. I was soon hired by a publishing house to ghostwrite my first two books. Twenty-five years later, I just finished writing book #70!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been mostly smooth, looking back. But there have been struggles here and there. I had to learn to negotiate for raises and find new positions when I felt my growth was stagnant. And I’ve had to learn better techniques and behaviors for money management and self-care. But overall, I’ve worked with some amazing authors and had great success.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a professional writer, it has been hard to find the time (or make the time) to write for myself, past journaling a few times a week. But last January I started a Substack and that longer-form writing has allowed me to tell more stories, past the quick social media posts. I’ve really enjoyed it.
I’m proud that I’ve been able to tell more of my own story, especially since my specialty is memoir. I spend my days writing other people’s stories, but have often felt I wasn’t getting to live my own story because I was spending too much time in my office with work. Writing about my own life has been therapeutic, and the positive feedback I’ve received lets me know that my struggles are universal and common.
I think the more we share with others, the more understanding and compassionate we become.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
They might not know that I’m also a published poet. I’ve been writing poetry since childhood, especially silly haikus.
