Daily Inspiration: Meet Allie Mac

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Mac

Hi Allie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was the middle child in a family of three girls. Both my sisters were super artsy in different ways and I would always tell myself MAYBE I should just stick to sports and academics. BUT one thing I always loved doing in my free time was watching YouTube videos of girls like me all around the world.

You see, I grew up in Spain and Brazil moving around a lot, so some of my only constants in life were my family, my faith in Jesus, and those YouTubers that felt like friends sometimes.

Anytime we would come back to the U.S. for any period of time the thing I wanted to do immediately was THRIFT. My Dad would take us (usually on a Saturday when Mom was cleaning) and I was obsessed. I still remember some of my best finds – like the label-maker I used to label ANYTHING in our home and my only cute skirt that I wore every other day in 6th grade! A passion for secondhand was born during those times. I saw no difference. The items still had so much life in them and they were over half the price! Count me in.

That leads me to today. While I studied pre-med and thought I would go on to be a doctor, that’s not where I ended up. I actually taught Middle School for a few years before landing where I am now. Today, I have found myself being a creative – something I never thought I would say! And one thing I learned is that being a CREATIVE can mean so many different things. You don’t have to fit a specific mould. For me that looks like making YouTube videos of the things I love and thrifting for others!

My favorite thing about being a CREATIVE is that I know I am capable of creativity because I am made in the image of God. He is the ultimate Creator, creating US. We are such intricate human beings & I feel so amazed that I get to be considered a creative in His image.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road. But at the same time, it has been in some ways.

It’s smooth in the way that I get to choose my hours. That has been so nice. Coming from teaching where I had to be at work and ON from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. getting to choose what you want to do with your day has been amazing.

On the other hand, there are so many things that have made it not feel so smooth. Like, second-guessing myself and imposter syndrome. Or when sales are slow because people aren’t shopping for themselves around Christmas.

I do think you have to be mentally strong to work for yourself. And if you are trying to start a business and work for yourself right now, my message to you would be to KEEP GOING!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My main focus (apart from thrifting for others) is my YouTube channel. I’d say I specialize in minimalism because that is what most people relate to on my channel.

I am proud of the accomplishment of even starting a channel and also the fact that I don’t feel the need to overwhelm myself with getting certain videos out.

I think what makes my channel different is just how real, raw, and honest I am in the videos. I don’t ever feel the need to put on a show (which don’t get me wrong works very well for many people), but I just love showing you that this is me and I am normal. I think making my videos feel more like a FaceTime call has been fun.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
That’s a really difficult question to answer. There are so many memories of fun things we have had the opportunity of doing, but I have to say… my favorite memory is when my parents, my sisters, and I would go for evening walks with our bags of sunflower seeds and just enjoy that time together. My parents arm in arm, my sisters and I chatting or running ahead – actually probably falling behind. It’s the most simple times that are the most beautiful.
