Daily Inspiration: Meet Amber North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber North

Hi Amber, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. I graduated from McGavock High School in 2002, and Western Kentucky University in 2006 with a degree in news-editorial journalism. I moved to Atlanta right after college, and was a resident from 2006 until April 2024.

I started stand-up comedy in July 2013, but didn’t get consistent with it until the fall of 2014. By January 2016, I was a producer, booker, and host of Grrrls Nite Out, an all-femme comedy showcase. The show’s concept pays homage to the riot grrrl movement.

From 2016-2024, I was performing on Atlanta stages and surrounding cities regularly, including Asheville, Chattanooga, Athens, Charlotte, Columbia (S.C.), and New Orleans.

I opened for Doug Benson at 40 Watt Club in Athens, Ga. as well as Joe Lycett in Nashville, TN. I am one half of AA Productions with co-producer and co-host AJ Jacobs, as well as co-producing for Bad Apple Comedy shows at Cyanide Cider and Crazy Gnome Brewery. I also produce and host a comedy show at Drkmttr Collective.

Additional comedy accolades and festivals: Laugh Riot Grrrl Festival selection, 2024; 2023 Chocolate Sundaes First Impressions Graduate; Atlanta’s West End Comedy Fest 2022; 1865 Comedy Festival 2021; Atlanta’s Resurgens Fest 2018 and 2017; Atlanta Comedy Femme Fest 2019 and 2017; New Orlean’s Black Girls Giggle Festival July 2018; Nashville’s #BrokenRecordShow 2018; SweetWater 420 Fest 2016

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not a smooth road. My mom was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was 10, and dealing with that has always been a challenge. My dad was also battling drug addiction, so that was around the time I started creating a world of my own to cope. I called it Amberland, and that’s now my comedy brand.

Amberland always took me to a happy place, even when the reality was the direct opposite. It was a land where I was not judged for being “weird” for having an eclectic taste in pop culture.

People called me “crazy” and “weird” because of my off-kilter style and sense of humor. It really was just them running out of things to call me since I was unbothered once I was found the root of their problems: they were projecting their insecurity on me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a stand-up comedian currently based out of Nashville, Tenn., after spending the past 11 years of my experience in Atlanta, Ga.

I am the creator, producer, and host of Grrrls Nite Out, which was Atlanta’s longest running all-femme stand-up comedy showcase from 2016-2023. It was recently revived in Nashville in December 2024, with another future return in 2025.

What sets me apart is my dark wit and subtly biting, deadpan social commentary that consistently wins over crowds. I have performed all over the country, including stops in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and cities all over the southeast region.

I feel that I push boundaries with my comedy, often incorporating hilarious anecdotes with clever, honest observations about life.

I’m most proud of the fact that I get a lot of positive feedback from a diverse group of people. It really means a lot that I have made such a positive impact on peoples’ lives, and their support and encouragement means everything.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Everyone is not rooting for you. It took me a long time to accept that some folks already made their minds up about me, no matter how hard I tried to change their minds. Best relief I ever got was to stop my urge to people-please.

Another important lesson is to always accept help, especially when it’s offered. It’s a great feeling to be independent, but it’s also okay to have assistance. Doing it all is awesome, until it becomes too much.
