Daily Inspiration: Meet Amiya Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amiya Harris.

Amiya Harris

Hi Amiya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Amiya Harris, and I’m 16 years old. I’ve always been the type of kid who loved to stay busy so my schedule stays pretty booked. I’ve been dancing since I was three, and acting since I was six. I also did pageants as a kid and starting to get back into them.

I’m a competitive dancer who spends most of my time in the studio. When I’m not in the studio, I’m auditioning for roles or planning to write my film. I’ll be competing at the National American Miss pageant next weekend in Cool Springs!

I’m a patient at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital who is fighting Chron’s disease. I do my best to not let my health problems interrupt my plans and mess up my goals in life. I want to continue a future in the arts, but I have a backup plan of being an interior designer. I plan to move to California for college and live there.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs with confidence in myself and the hobbies I’m a part of.

A big bump in the road was being diagnosed with several different health issues at a young age. When I was 10, I found myself constantly in the hospital, in and out of Nashville. I was very scared and had completely given up.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Some of the movies that I have been in are Orphan Horse, Black America, Good Morning Moon, and Finding Me. I also wrote, directed, and starred in my short film called Midnight. I have also done a few commercials and tv show episodes. I am most proud of my short film Midnight because I was 10 when I wrote and filmed it. I also wrote the script and cast the actors.

Midnight was accepted into a lot of film festivals and won awards. I think what sets me apart from others is my creativity and professionalism. I find myself constantly thinking of new ideas to turn into films. I’m usually one of if not the youngest people on set, which I feel helped me become more professional since I work with so many adults.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe the acting industry will always be around because there is always someone wanting to tell a story rather through movies or tv shows.
