Daily Inspiration: Meet Angelia Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelia Williams

Hi Angelia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Singing has always been my passion since I was very young. In my 20’s I decided to become formerly trained and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to learn how to teach music and train singers. I became a vocal coach during undergrad, and loved it. A lot of my clients would struggle with issues such as Music Performance Anxiety, low self-esteem, low self-worth, compromised confidence, and other mental health issues down through the years. I wanted to be able to service clients not only skillfully, but ethically, Therefore, I obtained my Masters in Psychology and have completed all coursework towards my PhD in Performance Psychology. My research is with professional soul singers and explores how Positive Psychology can help them to have optimal performance results consistently. I coach singers from a whole-person perspective (body, soul, and spirit) so that every part of them can grow not only vocally, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to become better performers.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No road worth traveling is smooth. I have suffered immense tragedy and trauma along my path. My husband and I were homeless at one point years ago and nobody in Nashville had any idea. I lost both of my parents 2-weeks apart and suffered somewhat of a mental breakdown. Also, we all were adversely affected by COVID-19. All of this was happening while I was trying my hardest to keep my business afloat and struggling with my own mental health.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a highly specialized vocal coach and also performance psychology expert. A lot of my clientele suffer from Music Performance Anxiety and seek to overcome this obstacle because it impedes with their performance outcomes. What sets me apart is my level of education and experience with psychological issues and roadblocks that singers may deal with silently, I work with clients not only in the area of vocal pedagogy, vocal hygiene, and vocal maintenance; but I am also an educated mental health professional with a focus on mindset improvement, confidence building, facing trauma through Positive Psychology, and anxiety. There are clients that suffer from trait anxiety that I send to a clinician for treatment to remain ethical, and there are clients that I build a treatment plan for because they suffer from state anxiety of which I am qualified to psychologically treat. State anxiety can be remedied through a change in mindset, perspective, and perception. Also, I teach visualization techniques, breathing techniques, and mindfulness for anxiety management to help clients when they are on stage.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I am also a recording artist myself, and have a podcast entitled “Creatively Balance” that is specifically for singers and anyone else in the Performing Arts community.
