Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Katarina.
Hi Anna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
It’s cliche, but I’ve been obsessed with music since I was teeny. I always knew it’s what I wanted to do more than anything. I grew up in British Columbia, Canada with frequent visits to see my dad in Western North Carolina. I studied classical piano, voice, and violin as a kid, then transitioned into Jazz/Contemporary in college. I did most of my post-secondary in Nelson, BC and some at Berklee College of Music. Since then, I’ve been traveling, moving around, playing as many gigs as possible, trying to figure out what feels like home and where I fit.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My early 20s were hard, I struggled with depression for a few years. Sometimes I feel frustrated that those years were wasted, but I realize they made me who I am now, and who knows how lost I would be now if I hadn’t taken the time to find myself then.
It can often be a challenge to stay positive in the music industry. It’s easy to feel discouraged, mediocre, or like you’re not working hard enough. But if music was easy, wouldn’t everyone be doing it? I try to stay focused on the journey and what makes me happy every day. There is no point in pursuing something you love if it doesn’t make you feel good.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a musician. I write, play multiple instruments, produce and collaborate. I’m proud that I made the decision to pursue this challenging career path, as hard as it can be. I’m still finding my niche and what truly makes me unique on a public level. When I was younger. I shied away from being “different” and tried to fit my art into a box that people would like. Now, I’m in the process of awakening all parts of my creative self and integrating them into my art. Vocally, I have a big range and a lot of classical training. I write contemporary indie music – one of my goals for the next year is to write songs that showcase my personal voice and make it stand out.
I’m releasing my debut solo album in 2022!! Look out for that.
I also have an indie-folk project, Rumour Mill.
What does success mean to you?
General success to me means happiness, kindness, being present, and maintaining a sense of purpose. In my career, success looks like reaching a point where my music and reputation allow me to be financially comfortable, collaborate with recognized musicians, play theatres and festivals, record every year, and perform at Red Rocks.
