Today we’d like to introduce you to Avalon Fair
Hi Avalon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for art started at a young age, my mom always told me there are no mistakes in art and that always allowed me to feel free and helped with the perfectionism and attention to detail I focused on. My father was a photographer so I get my eye from them! I have worked with many mediums, paint being one of my first and sculpture being a later found love!
I believe I was three years old when my paintings where first in an art show. I also had an amazing art teacher in middle school who inspired me.
My love for makeup artistry started as a child doing pageants and modeling learning the ropes from my mom and other professional artists over the years but the biggest reason I loved makeup is I had pretty rough acne. I loved that I could change the way I felt and boost my confidence having fun makeup looks that covered my acne and showed off my personality and creativity.
I attended a makeup artistry school in Las Vegas and began the journey of finding what I love. I attended school originally thinking I would do high fashion avant-garde for runway or print and a slight interest in tv makeup. But I would have never imagined that I would fall in love with makeup effects! When I took the Sfx class there was no going back to boring beauty! I learned to sculpt mold and cast my own prosthetics and an artist was born.
After artistry school I worked on a few film projects and found I love being involved in productions weather live theatre or tv and film! I enjoy heading makeup teams or being the key where I get to have creative input, sometimes crossing over into set design, costume and props( or wherever they’ll let me migrate over to)
I also started picking up gigs for fabrication and prop making and then by learning basics on jobs I have been able to apply all my artistic skills to large scale fabrication for designer stores!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been hard, I stuggled with gig life and getting steady work and I also struggled with the mental side of things, of societies constructs of what a job should look like. This isn’t just a job it’s a way of living being a creative. I’m learning to love the way my brain works and also retracting myself that there are alternatives to the 9-5 and that can still make money and be respected. After working what I thought was to be a “normal” office job is when I truly accepted my artist side and only want to work in a creative environment from now on.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am trained as makeup artist but I am also a painter, sculptor, fabricator and creative director.
I am very proud of my work from 2018 to present partnering with Vincent Lau photography working as his makeup artist and creative director for shoots. We created some amazing editorials in the desert of Nevada, beaches of California, shell covered abandoned buildings in New Orleans, waterfalls and you name it we’ve shot it!
My first short horror film I keyed makeup on I ended up making a huge bond with the production team and they let me have creative freedoms that most makeup spirits wouldn’t, it was the first time I had experienced my ideas be put into fruition and see them play before me in the screen.Creative control production company have me the confidence I needed to take me into my creative career.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have chronic illness, so I have to adapt things to my health state.
